Their projects may include implementing cybersecurity systems, physical security upgrades, or compliance initiatives. Security Project Managers act as a bridge between technical teams and stakeholders, ensuring that security goals align with business objectives.

What does a security project manager do?

A security project manager’s responsibilities are to supervise the creation of security systems for companies and organizations to ensure the safety and protection of personnel, campus assets, and information. As a security project manager, you lead a team of security professionals to generate a plan of action to mitigate threats to the company. Your duties may also include helping a company create policies to improve site security, running safety drills and tests of the safety systems, and training staff on how to follow safety procedures and help improve security through individual action steps. You must also understand and apply any municipal, state, and federal regulations related to the installation and implementation of security equipment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a security project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Security Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, knowledge of security principles, and experience in risk assessment, typically supported by a degree in a relevant field and certifications like PMP or CISSP. • Monitor project progress, schedules, and budgets, and adjust plans as needed to meet project objectives.
  • Maintain thorough documentation and reporting for all projects, including photos, notes, and claim-related records.
  • Communicate proactively with property owners, clients, and insurance partners to provide updates and manage expectations.
  • Support and, where applicable, lead restoration technicians and subcontractors on active job sites.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and best practices while working on active restoration and construction sites.
  • Participate in a rotational 24/7 on-call schedule to respond to emergency loss events as required.
  • Use project management and restoration platforms, including the person, XactAnalysis, and PSA, to manage workflows and documentation.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum 3+ years of project management experience within the disaster restoration industry.
  • Proven experience managing disaster and residential restoration projects and insurance claims.
  • Hands-on experience with the person, XactAnalysis, and PSA software platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and manage detailed insurance restoration estimates and claims.
  • Experience assessing property damage related to flooding, water damage, fire damage, hail damage, and other emergency loss events.
  • Experience working directly with insurance adjusters and insurance carriers.
  • Ability to manage multiple active projects and claims simultaneously in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Strong documentation and reporting abilities with a high level of accuracy and detail.
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract.
  • Comfort working in a rotational 24/7 on-call schedule approximately one week per month.
  • Strong sense of urgency and ability to work efficiently under pressure.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Detail-oriented approach with a focus on accuracy and quality.
  • Ability to prioritize effectively and manage a high volume of claims.

Nice to have:

  • IICRC certification.
  • WRT, FSRT, CCT, or RIA certifications.
  • Moisture Control Certification.
  • PMP, CAP, or other formal project management certification.
  • Experience working with insurers.
  • Construction Management diploma or related post-secondary education.
