What does a security guard do?

Security Guards work in various organizations to provide site or inventory monitoring and crime prevention activities. This may include actively patrolling an area on foot or in a security vehicle, or standing guard at key entrances or exits. In other cases, Security Guards may monitor security video footage and check credentials for those entering a facility. In an emergency they help direct emergency vehicles and police; they may also administer basic first aid. Security Guards keep accurate logs of daily or nightly activities and report any concerns to their supervisor. Ultimately, a Security Guard seeks to de-escalate a conflict whenever possible, but on occasion, they may need to restrain an individual. A job as a Security Guard likely demands non-traditional hours; some facilities require security for nights, weekends, and holidays.

How hard is it to get hired as a security guard?

Getting hired as a security guard typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent, a clean background check, and sometimes a security license or certification depending on the state. Employers often look for good communication skills, reliability, and the ability to handle stressful situations, with some positions requiring prior experience or training. The hiring process can vary in difficulty based on location, the employer's requirements, and the level of security clearance needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a security guard, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Security Guard, you need a keen sense of observation, basic security procedures knowledge, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent, often supplemented by relevant licensing. Familiarity with surveillance systems, alarm panels, and incident reporting software is commonly required. Strong communication, alertness, and reliability are standout soft skills for this role. These abilities are crucial to effectively protect people and property, respond to emergencies, and maintain a secure environment.

What is a security guard?

Security guards are professionals responsible for protecting property, assets, and people from theft, vandalism, and other potential dangers. They monitor surveillance equipment, patrol assigned areas, and enforce rules and regulations to maintain safety. Security guards may work in a variety of settings, including businesses, schools, hospitals, and public events. In addition to preventing crime, they often respond to emergencies and provide assistance to visitors or employees as needed.

What are some common challenges security guards face during their shifts, and how are these typically managed?

Security Guards often encounter challenges such as managing unauthorized access, handling emergencies, and dealing with difficult individuals. These situations require strong observation skills, quick decision-making, and adherence to established protocols. Most employers provide regular training and clear guidelines to help guards respond effectively and safely. This role works closely with the Information System Security Manager (ISSM), system owners, enclave teams, and CDS engineering staff to execute day-to-day security operations focused on:
Direct audit and review of CDS system logs and security-relevant events
Continuous monitoring of guard behavior and data flows
Validation of enforcement rules and configuration baselines

The Cybersecurity Auditor / ISSO provides technical expertise in:

Transfer decision validation and sanitization evidence review
Development of procedures and checklists for recurring security audits
This work ensures compliance with NIST SP 800-53, DoWI 8510.01 and CDS boundary protection requirements, and helps maintain CDS systems in an audit-ready, fail-secure posture.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Conduct continuous monitoring activities for assigned authorization boundaries, with specific focus on CDS guard behavior and data flows.
Perform detailed security audits directly on Linux-based CDS systems, including review of operating system, application, and custom guard logs.
Monitor guard behavior and validate data flow enforcement rules to ensure only authorized transfers occur across domains.
Develop and maintain procedures for Linux log collection, rotation, retention, and secure storage to support audit requirements.
Prepare, review, and update authorization documentation related to audit and monitoring controls (e.g., SSP sections, monitoring procedures, control implementation summaries).
Conduct periodic reviews of information systems to ensure compliance with the security authorization package and applicable policies.
Assess the security impact of system changes (e.g., configuration updates, patching, rule changes) and provide recommendations to the ISSM prior to implementation.
Validate time synchronization, log integrity, and audit completeness across CDS components.
Identify and troubleshoot logging gaps, misconfigurations, or failures directly on Linux systems (e.g., auditd, rsyslog, custom logging services).
Provide log extracts, audit trails, and evidence packages to support internal and external audits and assessments.
Ensure audit records are reviewed and documented, including identification, investigation, and resolution of anomalies.
Ensure appropriate logging and monitoring of all internal components that make up the HSG/TSG [consider expanding or clarifying this acronym in the final posting].
Coordinate with system and network administrators to ensure logging and monitoring requirements are embedded in system deployments and configuration baselines.
Support RMF lifecycle activities within XACTA, including maintenance of control implementations and bodies of evidence.
Maintain SSP sections related to monitoring and audit architecture, and keep documentation current with system changes.
Validate STIG implementation (particularly OS and application STIGs) and audit configuration settings, and coordinate remediation for non-compliant findings.
Assist with development and maintenance of assessment and authorization documentation and other bodies of evidence.

Education and Experience:

  • 7+ years of cybersecurity experience.
Strong Linux experience (e.g., RHEL/CentOS/Ubuntu), including command-line, log analysis, and basic system administration.
Experience supporting DoD Risk Management Framework (RMF) and continuous monitoring activities.
Experience reviewing DISA STIGs and correlating vulnerability findings with system logs and configuration settings.
Working knowledge of NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 controls, particularly the AU (Audit) and SI (System and Information Integrity) control families.
Experience conducting security audits, direct log/telemetry review on Linux systems, incident investigations, and preparing associated documentation or reports.
    ________________________________________
    EDUCATION / CERTIFICATIONS
Technical training, cybersecurity-related certification(s), or bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Assurance, Cybersecurity, or a related field.
Relevant industry certifications preferred (e.g., Security+, CISSP, CASP, CEH, Linux-related certifications like LPIC-1, RHCSA), depending on contract requirements.
