What is a second in command?

A Second In Command (SIC) is the person who serves directly under the leader or head of an organization, such as a deputy, vice president, or chief operating officer. Their primary role is to support the top executive, help implement strategies, and step in during their absence. SICs often manage day-to-day operations, coordinate between departments, and ensure that the organization's goals are met efficiently. The specific duties can vary depending on the organization's size and industry, but they are always considered the leader's right-hand person.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a second in command?

To thrive as a Second In Command, you need strong leadership, strategic planning, and operational management skills, often supported by a relevant bachelor's degree and substantial managerial experience. Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, project management tools, and sometimes industry-specific certifications is typically required. Exceptional communication, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities help you effectively support the organization's leader and drive team performance. These competencies ensure smooth organizational operations and effective execution of the company's strategic objectives.

What are some common challenges faced by a second in command, and how can they be effectively addressed?

As a Second In Command, one frequent challenge is balancing support for the leader with independent decision-making. You may need to step in during the leader’s absence or provide candid feedback while maintaining alignment with their vision. Effective communication and adaptability are crucial, as you often serve as a bridge between leadership and the wider team. Building trust and proactively seeking clarity about your responsibilities can help you navigate these situations successfully.

Job description

Sous Chef β€” $75,000+

Gourmet & Company | Johnson City, Tennessee

Gourmet & Company is an independent, chef-driven restaurant in Johnson City, Tennessee, serving the region since 1989. We are looking for an experienced Sous Chef to work directly alongside our Executive Chef as second-in-command in the kitchen.

This is a hands-on position for someone who genuinely likes to cook. Our kitchen is from-scratch, seasonal and ingredient-driven, with longstanding relationships with local farmers and producers and our own small urban farm just minutes from the restaurant.

We're looking for a strong cook and leaderβ€”not someone who wants to manage the kitchen from an office. The Sous Chef works alongside the team in service and production, helps train and develop cooks, maintains standards, and shares responsibility for ordering, inventory, waste control, sanitation and day-to-day kitchen operations.

What we're looking for

  • Significant experience in quality, scratch-driven kitchens
  • Strong line and production skills
  • Experience leading and training a kitchen team
  • Excellent organization and communication
  • High standards for food, cleanliness and consistency
  • The judgment and maturity to serve as second-in-command
  • Culinary degree welcome, but not required

The position

  • $75,000+ annually, commensurate with experience
  • Full-time salaried position
  • Five-day workweek
  • Restaurant closed Sundays and Mondays
  • Typical schedule approximately 10 a.m.–9 p.m.
  • Work directly with the Executive Chef
  • Opportunity for meaningful responsibility in an established independent restaurant

Gourmet & Company has been independently owned and operated in Johnson City for 37 years. We're not a restaurant group or corporate concept. We have a stable identity, a loyal clientele and a long history in the community, while continuing to evolve what we cook and how we operate.

Johnson City sits in the mountains of Northeast Tennessee, within easy reach of Asheville, Knoxville and the Blue Ridge. For someone interested in relocating, the area offers an unusually good combination of outdoor recreation, quality of life and cost of living.

We're interested in finding the right person rather than simply filling a position. If you're an experienced cook or sous chef looking for a kitchen where you can cook, lead and have a real impact, we'd like to hear from you.
