Job description

Summary

The Public Safety Officer (PSO) is a uniformed, first responder position within Public Safety that provides emergency and public safety services to the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) community.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Employ a variety of proactive patrol techniques and strategies to ensure the safety and security of all MCW-affiliated persons and property. Engage in community oriented problem solving and crime prevention measures.

  • Decisively respond to assigned calls for service, emergent situations, and critical incidents occurring during shift. Employ principles of Incident Command System (ICS) when addressing developing events.

  • Assist and/or provide support for various types of investigations. Conduct initial interviews, collect evidence, and secure crime scenes. Document findings and prepare written case reports.

  • Act as a first responder to all fire and life safety incidents. Provide initial assessment of situation and make determination of appropriate response. Administer first aid and life support (e.g., AED and CPR) to victims.

  • As assigned, monitor the Department's communications and surveillance center. Answer all incoming calls on service and emergency lines; log all activities via Computer-Aided Dispatch software. Coordinate radio communications between center and field-bas

  • Assist in associate and executive protection details, investigations, special events security, surveillance activities, and other unique assignments as a member of various departmental task forces.

  • Perform a number of community service functions including, but not limited to, conduct safety escorts to and from requested on campus locations; complete inspections and reports regarding safety hazards; and enforce MCW policies and procedures.

  • Upon request, deliver community based personal safety and security awareness training to students, staff, and faculty. Assist in the preparation of informational material including brochures, handouts, and multimedia presentations.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Schedule:Second shift. This position follows a 5-on, 2-off rotation, with two consecutive days off during the week and working weekends and holidays being required for this role.Knowledge - Skills - Abilities
  • Knowledge of safety practices, emergency procedures, operations and maintenance, risk management, planning and evaluation.

  • Task management, coordination, and problem solving, investigation, restraint and self-defense skills.

Qualifications

Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis.

Minimum Required Education: Associate's Degree

Minimum Required Experience: 2 years

Physical Requirements

Work requires occasionally lifting moderate weight materials, standing, or walking continuously.

Work Environment

Occasional exposure to dust, noise, temperature changes, or contact with water or other liquids. Work is performed in an environmentally controlled environment.

Sensory Acuity

Ability to detect and translate speech or other communication required. May occasionally require the ability to distinguish colors and perceive relative distances between objects.
