Seating Engineer information

What are some typical challenges a seating engineer faces when balancing comfort, safety, and manufacturing constraints?

Seating Engineers often navigate the complex task of designing seats that meet stringent safety standards, deliver optimal comfort for a diverse user base, and remain cost-effective to manufacture. Balancing ergonomic requirements with crashworthiness and lightweight materials can be challenging, as improvements in one area may require compromises in another. Collaboration with design, testing, and manufacturing teams is crucial to ensure that the final product aligns with regulatory standards, aesthetic goals, and production timelines.

What is the difference between Seating Engineer vs Automotive Interior Designer?

AspectSeating EngineerAutomotive Interior Designer
Required CredentialsEngineering degree, CAD skills, certifications in automotive designDesign degree, CAD skills, focus on aesthetics and user experience
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, engineering labs, automotive companiesDesign studios, automotive OEMs, supplier companies
Employer & Industry UsageAutomotive manufacturers, suppliers, engineering firmsAutomotive OEMs, design studios, aftermarket companies

Seating Engineers focus on the technical development, safety, and functionality of vehicle seats, working closely with engineering teams. Automotive Interior Designers concentrate on the aesthetic, comfort, and user experience aspects of vehicle interiors. While both roles collaborate in vehicle design, Seating Engineers are more technical and engineering-oriented, whereas Interior Designers emphasize visual appeal and ergonomics.

What is a seating engineer?

Seating Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test seating systems for vehicles, ensuring they meet safety, comfort, and aesthetic requirements. They collaborate with designers, material specialists, and safety engineers to create seats that comply with regulatory standards and customer preferences. Their work includes selecting materials, developing ergonomic shapes, and integrating features like heating, ventilation, and electronic adjustments. Seating Engineers also conduct tests for durability, crash safety, and usability before seats go into production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a seating engineer?

To thrive as a Seating Engineer, you need expertise in mechanical engineering principles, ergonomic design, and materials science, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in engineering. Proficiency in CAD software (such as CATIA or SolidWorks), knowledge of industry standards, and familiarity with testing and prototyping tools are essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help set top candidates apart. These competencies are crucial for developing safe, comfortable, and innovative seating solutions that meet both regulatory and user requirements.

Job Description

As an A/V Engineer, you will be a technical owner and subject-matter expert for VERSANT’s enterprise audio/visual, telepresence, and workplace experience systems. Reporting into the Workplace Engineering Manager, Unified Communications (UComm), this role is responsible for designing, standardizing, and evolving the technologies that shape how employees navigate, collaborate, and engage within VERSANT offices.

You will lead the technical design of conference rooms, collaboration spaces, executive environments, and large-format A/V installations, while also owning the engineering standards for digital signage, wayfinding systems, and workplace seating displays. This role is expected to define repeatable, scalable patterns that integrate A/V, collaboration platforms, and physical workplace experiences.

You will play a central role in delivering the state-of-the-art workplace technology experience for VERSANT’s new HQ, establishing room typologies, device standards, signage architectures, and integration models that will be replicated across 20+ global locations. You will collaborate closely with UComm, Network Engineering, Workplace Product & Operations, Facilities, and Cyber Security to ensure these systems are secure by design, resilient, and operationally sound.

    Qualifications

    Basic Requirements:

    • Significant experience designing and supporting enterprise A/V and workplace technology environments at scale
    • Deep hands-on expertise with conference room and telepresence systems, including:
      • Zoom Rooms and Zoom-integrated A/V solutions
      • Executive boardrooms and large-format collaboration spaces
    • Strong experience evaluating, selecting, and standardizing A/V hardware and control systems, including:
      • Cameras, microphones, speakers, DSPs, codecs, room controllers, and displays
    • Experience designing and supporting digital signage and wayfinding systems, including:
      • Lobby and campus displays
      • Room scheduling and seating visualization
      • Integration with workplace platforms and data sources
    • Solid understanding of network architecture as it relates to A/V and signage, including:
      • QoS, VLAN design, bandwidth planning, latency, and redundancy
      • Close collaboration with network teams on transport dependencies
    • Proven ability to define repeatable room, signage, and workplace experience standards and deploy them globally
    • Advanced troubleshooting skills across hardware, software, and network layers
    • Experience operating in environments with formal security, compliance, and change-management requirements

    Desired Characteristics:

    • Experience contributing to HQ or flagship office builds used as global reference architectures
    • Strong understanding of hybrid collaboration and in-office navigation challenges
    • Security-aware approach to:
      • Firmware and device lifecycle management
      • Access control and system hardening
      • Secure integration with collaboration and workplace platforms
    • Ability to operate with high autonomy, translating architectural direction into technical execution
    • Strong documentation skills, including room standards, signage patterns, diagrams, and operational handoffs
    • Comfort mentoring other A/V engineers and serving as a technical escalation point

    Additional Requirements:

(Add the appropriate Worker Type Language below):

    • Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week.
