Lifeguard Position
The County of Volusia is seeking lifeguards for the Beach Safety Division. This is an unclassified position located at various beach locations throughout Volusia County, and will be responsible for providing skilled beach safety work in preventing injuries or deaths in a County swimming area.
Note: Lifeguard is a seasonal, part-time, temporary appointment.

Illustrative duties include maintaining order and discipline among swimmers and other persons at an assigned County swimming area, rescuing swimmers in distress, applying resuscitation and administering medical aid when necessary, assisting in maintaining general appearance and cleanliness in the area when able to do so without distraction from lifesaving, reporting Habitat Conservation Zone violations in the area when able to do so without distraction from lifesaving, being willing to relocate to other county locations based on operational needs, adhering to Federal, State, and Local ordinances, and performing other duties as assigned.
Minimum requirements include successful completion of recruit class held by County Beach Safety, certification as an Emergency Medical Responder/First Responder, meeting all physical and performance requirements established by the County, annually or at the request of the Beach Safety Director meeting the physical ability requirement of a 500-meter swim of a measured course in under ten (10) minutes, successfully passing the "Lifeguard Field Training Operations" program, being at least sixteen (16) years of age, possessing a valid driver's license at time of appointment, and passing required background check (criminal history, physical, TB and drug screen).
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of approved water rescue methods and specific medical aid techniques, ability to rapidly learn rules and regulations relating to park and beach activities, ability to exercise tact, firmness, and good judgment in enforcing such rules and regulations, ability to prevent dangerous situations from arising, to recognize emergencies and to take effective action, skill in surf swimming, lifesaving and medical aid, ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, ability to work under stressful conditions, ability to interact effectively with others, and ability to swim.
