Job Description Summary

The Traffic Control Laborer is responsible for supporting construction and roadwork crews by ensuring safe and efficient traffic flow through and around job sites. This position plays a critical role in maintaining a safe work environment for employees, motorists, and the public by properly setting up, monitoring, and removing traffic control devices in compliance with company and DOT standards. Work will be performed per the supervisor's instruction. 
 
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties & Functions)
 

Traffic Control Setup & Maintenance

  • Set up, maintain, and remove traffic control devices including cones, signs, barricades, and arrow boards according to project plans and MUTCD guidelines
  • Assist with lane closures, detours, and flagging operations

Flagging Operations

  • Direct traffic safely through construction zones using hand signals, paddles, and communication devices
  • Monitor traffic flow and adjust control measures as needed to ensure safety and efficiency

Safety Compliance

  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures and promote a safety-first culture
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and DOT regulations
  • Report hazards, unsafe conditions, or incidents immediately

Support Field Operations

  • Assist crews with general labor duties as needed (lifting, loading, cleanup, etc.)
  • Work closely with supervisors, equipment operators, and crew members to support daily operations

Equipment & Materials Handling

  • Load, unload, and transport traffic control equipment and materials
  • Maintain and inspect equipment to ensure proper working condition

Communication & Coordination

  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to coordinate traffic control needs
  • Interact professionally with the public when addressing traffic-related questions or concerns
  • Other duties as assigned per supervisor.

Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required. • Valid Certified Traffic Control Card a plus

• Ability to follow verbal and written instruction.

• Ability to do basic math.

• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.

• Standard Driver’s License is required.

Education/Experience

• High school diploma or General Education Degree GED is preferred.

• Previous related experience in the construction field is a plus.

• Two years of experience preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above their shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move anywhere up to 100 lbs. Physical agilities test may be required. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid outside weather conditions; and extreme cold and/or heat.
