Description
The Southern Region Parks Division of the Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking a Festival of Lights Show Seasonal Technician to assist with the fabrication, repair, installation, operation, and takedown of lights and displays for the Festival of Lights winter light show at Watkins Regional Park. This part-time seasonal position is expected to run from September 2026 through March 2027.
About the Program
The Festival of Lights is the Department's premier holiday attraction, held annually at Watkins Regional Park. The event features more than 1 million lights displayed along a 2-mile drive-through route, creating a memorable seasonal experience for thousands of visitors each year. The program requires extensive planning, installation, operation, and takedown efforts over several months. Staff from multiple work programs, along with contractors and partner divisions, collaborate to install displays, maintain electrical systems, ensure safety, and provide operational support throughout the season.

Examples of Important Duties
  • Test, clean, and repair light displays as needed
  • Install strands of lights on displays
  • Install light displays throughout the park
  • Monitor portable light towers and light show installations
  • Troubleshoot lighting issues and make field repairs
  • Use power cords, tools, carts, and other equipment safely
  • Remove, clean, sort, and store lights and displays at the end of the show
  • Monitor event operations to support visitor safety and event success
  • Provide support to Southern Region Parks Division staff
  • Support effective execution of daily tasks through teamwork and communication
  • Perform related tasks as required

Minimum Qualifications
Required
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to bend, stoop, stretch, climb, and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to stand for long periods
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, rain, humidity, and cold

Preferred
  • Experience in the electrical field
  • Experience with technical lighting, set design, or electrical equipment

Supplemental Information
May be subject to drug and alcohol testing.
When You'll Work
  • During light installation and takedown, the work shift is Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
  • Evening and weekend shifts may become available after installation is complete and the Festival of Lights program begins.
  • This position is expected to work approximately 32-40 hours per week from September 2026 to March 2027.

The following information is a summary of benefits extended to all Seasonal employees of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC). This is for informational purposes only and is subject to change.
Limited Benefits for Seasonal Employees
Health Insurance Plans
You are eligible for specific health insurance benefits if you worked, on average, 30 hours per week during your first 12 months of employment or from October 3rd to October 2nd each subsequent period following your first 12 months of employment. This equates to 1,560 hours over a 12-month period.
If and when you are eligible for benefits, you will receive notification directly from the Health & Benefits Office.
Eligible Employees Pay 35% of the health insurance plan premium and The Commission Pays 65%.
