The Park Maintenance Worker I contributes to the success and upkeep of the City's park system by performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks to ensure the overall aesthetic appeal of City parks. This position works both individually and alongside other staff responsible for the maintenance of parks and park equipment. In addition to the regular job tasks, this position assists to repair and maintain equipment used in the completion of the job. This position is part of a two-level career progression of Park Maintenance Worker I and II.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participates in the maintenance of parks and public grounds by carrying out a variety of manual labor tasks alongside other maintenance staff.

  • Supports various park facilities and equipment with activities such as mowing, planting, tree trimming, and other grounds maintenance; utilizes equipment, tools and machinery, including motorized vehicles for transportation between locations under direction from senior staff.

  • Contributes to a safe worksite and public environment through adherence to safe work practices and procedures.

  • Participates in housekeeping duties that include cleanup and maintenance of grounds and equipment; performs on-call duties and works overtime as required, including work supporting special events and snow removal.

Qualifications

Experience: Previous maintenance experience is preferred. Must be 18 years of age or older.

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required.

Environmental and Physical Demands: The Park Maintenance Worker I works outside in a variety of weather and environmental conditions such as heat, cold, wind, sun, rain, and snow. They are exposed to pollen, dust allergens, and other elements. This position requires the ability to lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds, move frequently, maintain a stationary position for periods of time, and to frequently traverse uneven outdoor areas. The Park Maintenance Worker performs physical activities that require considerable use of one's arms and legs moving one's whole body to climb, lift, balance, walk, twist, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl while handling materials. This position frequently ascends or descends stairs and ladders and works at heights; lifts and carries weight independently or with someone else; operates a variety of hand and power tools sometimes while working at heights. Drives or rides from site-to-site multiple times throughout the day and works in distracting situations including high volume traffic areas and city medians.
