Job description

Junior Lifeguard Position

Performs junior lifeguarding and instructional aid duties. Acts as attendant for slide/diving board usage. Assists in facility maintenance and cleanliness. This is a Safety Sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Education, Training, Experience, Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

Education / higher education: Must have completed the 8th grade of school.

Other requirements: Must be at least 14 years of age.

Driver's License requirement: None Required Endorsements: None

Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

Required certifications, licenses or registrations: Must be able to complete the following Jeff Ellis & Assoc. courses: Junior Lifeguard Program (through the City of Rio Rancho) or Learn to Swim Instructor Aid, CPR and First Aid. Must be able to swim at least 500 yards and, as part of this position, will be tested every two weeks.

Preferred certifications, licenses or registrations: None

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge: Must have a mature approach when dealing with patrons and co-workers. Must become knowledgeable about all aquatics programs so that questions asked by the public can be answered accurately.

Skills: Must have excellent public relations and customer service skills.

Abilities: Able to swim at least 500 yards

Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Will interact with other City staff, taking direction and providing information; will interact with facility patrons and swimmers, providing direction, guidance, instruction and enforcing rules and regulations.

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this position. The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Assists in pool area, grounds maintenance and cleanliness.
  • Attends all training sessions and in-service trainings.
  • Works in cooperation with the Head Lifeguard and Pool Manager.
  • Slide/diving board attendant.
  • Monitors flow of slide and diving board usage and safety heights.
