Seasonal Prototype Design information

What is a seasonal prototype designer?

Seasonal Prototype Designers are professionals who create and develop prototype products for specific seasons, often in industries like fashion, retail, or consumer goods. They work on limited-time collections or products to test new ideas, designs, and materials before full-scale production. Their role involves collaborating with design, marketing, and production teams to ensure prototypes meet seasonal trends, market demands, and quality standards. This position is typically temporary, aligned with specific product launch cycles or seasonal campaigns.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a seasonal prototype designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Seasonal Prototype Designer, you need a strong background in design, pattern making, and garment construction, often supported by a degree in fashion design or a related field. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, 3D modeling programs, and prototyping tools is typically required. Attention to detail, creativity, time management, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills are crucial for quickly developing innovative prototypes that meet seasonal trends and tight production timelines.

What are some common challenges faced in a seasonal prototype design role, and how can I prepare for them?

One of the main challenges in a Seasonal Prototype Design role is managing tight deadlines while ensuring high-quality outputs, as new prototypes must be developed quickly for each season’s product cycle. You’ll often collaborate closely with cross-functional teams like merchandising, engineering, and marketing, which requires strong communication and adaptability. To prepare, it's helpful to develop time management skills, stay current with design trends, and be comfortable working in a fast-paced, iterative environment where feedback and changes are frequent.

The Senior Technical Product Developer owns the technical development and execution of bags and accessories within Trove Brands' Soft Goods PM and Development team. This role manages the sample process from first prototype through final pre-production approval, ensuring construction, materials, and specifications meet product and quality standards. Working closely with Product Management, Design, Supply Chain, and overseas manufacturing partners, this role translates design intent into accurate, manufacturable products. The Senior Technical Product Developer serves as a key technical partner throughout development, driving precision, consistency, and timely execution.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the prototype and sample review process, evaluating construction, materials, hardware, trim, finishing, and overall execution against approved specifications.
  • Create, maintain, and update tech packs across active and carry-forward styles, accurately documenting design changes, material substitutions, construction revisions, and final approvals.
  • Communicate clear, actionable technical corrections to overseas manufacturing partners and manage revisions through resolution.
  • Support the Design-to-Product Development handoff, translating design concepts into factory-ready specifications while maintaining design intent and manufacturability.
  • Track sample submissions, approvals, and development milestones across seasonal calendars, maintaining accurate records and proactively identifying timeline or execution risks.
  • Partner with Product Managers, Design, and CMF Development to ensure material and construction decisions are technically viable and accurately represented in product specifications.
  • Participate in development reviews and pre-production approvals, assessing construction quality, specification compliance, and manufacturing feasibility while incorporating learnings into future development best practices.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Fashion Design, Technical Design, Textile Design, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in soft goods technical design or product development, including hands-on experience from prototype through pre-production in bags, accessories, or structured soft goods.
  • Demonstrated ability to create, read, evaluate, and maintain tech packs for construction accuracy and specification compliance.
  • Strong knowledge of soft goods construction, including seam types, hardware attachment, fabric behavior, trim integration, and finishing standards.
  • Experience working directly with overseas manufacturing partners, including Asian factories, throughout the development cycle from initial samples through bulk production.
  • Ability to communicate technical corrections and development direction to manufacturing partners with clarity, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator for technical flats, specification markup, and construction documentation, with the ability to travel internationally several times per year.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with PLM systems and product development documentation workflows.
  • Mandarin language capability.
  • Experience conducting in-person factory visits, sample evaluations, or manufacturing assessments.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple styles and development timelines simultaneously.
  • Passion for soft goods construction, material quality, manufacturing excellence, and delivering products to high technical and commercial standards.
