Insemination Operator
Full Time - Hourly
At Hormel Foods, base pay is one part of our total compensation package. The base hiring pay for this role is $25.40 per hour.

  • Must be 18 years of age or older

PURPOSE:
Perform daily breeder flock service activities associated with handling select, healthy breeder hens and toms, and department equipment as outlined and described in department operating manuals. Help coworkers in the areas of cost control, productivity, and safety by providing personal involvement in insemination area management, operating decisions, and problem solving.
PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • As trained and assigned through job rotation program, catch and hold mature breeder hens off the end of a short conveyor during breeder services.
  • As trained and assigned through job rotation program, hold and open breeder hens during the insemination process.
  • As trained and assigned through job rotation program, catch breeder toms by the legs and lift them up to a short stool, place their breast on the stool and then hold the tom during semen collection.
  • As trained, catch and weigh both breeder hens and toms during stock selection.
  • As trained and assigned through job rotation program, perform vaccinations through the use of vaccinating equipment.
  • As trained and assigned through job rotation program, catch and load young and mature breeder birds as required for transporting.
  • As trained and assigned through job rotation program, drive breeder hens and toms as required during specific moves or groupings.
  • Continually meet all Breeder Farm sanitation/isolation policies and procedures through attended training, supervisor communications, and practice of self-management skills.
  • Participate and be responsible for maintaining a safe working environment for all team members by:
    • Reporting all conditions or situations, and by reporting any safety hazards which jeopardize the safety of team employees.
    • Compliance to all department and corporate employee safety and protection programs.
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks as instructed by AI Specialist, A-Operator, or Breeder Supervisor.
  • Responsible to maintain satisfactory attendance performance by arriving at work at scheduled times.
  • Assist team employees in managing AI area controllable costs in the areas of:
    • Supplies
    • Repairs and maintenance.
    • Vehicle expense
    • Heat
    • Electricity

  • Assist team members in such a manner as to achieve optimum breeder performance in the areas of:
    • Fertility performance standard
    • Quality control of semen based on fertility, fertile egg production, number of hens/cc's of semen.
  • Handle live birds in a way that is consistent animal welfare and handling guidelines.

MINIMUM HIRING SPECIFICATIONS:
  • Able to twist, stoop, bend, squat, lift, carry and reach while handling live breeder hen and tom turkeys in a weight range under 10 pounds to over 80 pounds, from an occasional to frequent basis.
  • Cannot own or raise any type of fowl (turkeys, chickens, geese, pheasants, parakeets, etc.). Able to meet Breeder AI sanitation/isolation requirements.
  • Able to work in an environment were dust and ammonia is present.
  • Due to respiratory safety factors, this position requires compliance to company hygiene policy (i.e. no facial hair).
  • Able to do 6th grade level basic math (addition, subtraction). Test if available.
  • Able to be available for work consistently (check attendance record if available).

PREFERRED HIRING SPECIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience working with livestock (2 years).
  • Valid drivers license with good driving record.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Able to read and understand company programs and policies.
  • Able to perform 6th grade level math functions (addition, subtraction).
  • Able to wear eye and respiratory equipment on a continuous basis.
  • Able to walk on uneven surfaces on a continuous basis.
  • Able to shower at work daily.
  • Able to work five days/week, normally Monday through Friday.
  • While performing job duties, be able to:
    • Twist, stoop, and bend body frequently.
    • Squat occasionally.
    • Work above ground on/from platform trailer(s) occasionally.
    • Lift and carry 26 to 80 live pounds frequently from floor to waist level, and over 80 live pounds frequently.
    • Reach from below shoulder height to at shoulder height frequently, and to above shoulder height occasionally while lifting up to and over 80 live pounds
  • Able to communicate with Insemination Specialist, Supervisor, coworkers, and team members.
  • Able to work both inside and outside in varying degrees of temperatures and humidities, which are primarily dependent on seasonal weather conditions.
  • Able to flex and extend wrist(s) continuously.
  • Able to repeatedly grasp and pinch with both hands.
