Job Summary

Are you ready to embark on an epic adventure as a Summer Camp Counselor extraordinaire? Picture this: you, surrounded by an awesome team of Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialists, leading the charge to empower young minds to conquer any challenge that comes their way! You will be the guiding light for campers on their journey to mental and emotional greatness. Get ready to dive into a world of fun-filled activities designed to boost physical strength, sharpen mental skills, and supercharge those feel-good vibes!

But wait, there's more! With your trauma-informed approach, safety is our number one priority. Together, we'll build a fortress of trust and empowerment, ensuring every camper feels like they can take on the world.

This is a seasonal position during the summer. You will engage in two weeks of training and onboarding prior to camp, that includes how to operate a small challenge course, (zipline and tree climb). Then you will provide eight weeks of camp to youth in the Spokane community!

Qualifications:

  1. Minimum High School diploma or equivalent; obtaining or currently have a bachelors degree in relevant field preferred.
  2. Experience in planning, scheduling, and facilitating recreational and leisure activities.
  3. Ability to work with a diverse population staff and clients.
  4. Minimum one year of experience working and/or volunteering directly with youth; prior experience with at-risk population preferred.
  5. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and make ethical and safe decisions.
  6. Ability to manage individual stress and perform essential job functions in a safe and professional manner.
  7. Must be 21 years or older
  8. Able to pass criminal background check.
  9. Ability to obtain challenge course certification as needed to maintain and facilitate onsite challenge course activities.
  10. Valid drivers license.

Responsibilities:

  1. Motivate campers to learn new skills and engage in activities that promote their well-being.
  2. Provide hands-on guidance and support to campers during program activities and events.
  3. Maintain and organize recreational equipment and supplies, promptly reporting any issues or needs to supervisors.
  4. Provide support to campers during challenging times that could include emotional regulation and crisis response to ensure safety.
  5. Operate a challenge course to provide an engaging outdoor experience for campers (training provided)
  6. Assist in various camp areas as assigned by supervisors, contributing to overall program success.
  7. Attend all required trainings and meetings to stay updated on camp policies and procedures and ensure program effectiveness.
  8. Adheres to ethical standards, agency policy and procedures and Excelsior mission, vision, and values.
  9. Other duties as assigned by direct supervisor.

Work Environment:

This position requires both indoor and outdoor work responsibilities. In the performance of outdoor job responsibilities employees may occasionally be exposed to extreme environmental conditions (hot and/or cold) and should ensure they are dressed for or have the appropriate attire for potential weather-related job responsibilities. Employees may occasionally be exposed to moderate to loud noise levels. This job also operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, fax machines and operating software.

Physical Demands:

This role may require the ability to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle or feel, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and push, reach up to shoulder height, bend, and twist at the waist, walk on uneven ground, and lift up to 50 pounds. The employee may be regularly required to participate with the clients in daily activities such as recreation, chores, and preparation of meals. The employee may occasionally be responsible in responding to client crisis and performing physical safety interventions should the situation require it. Occasionally the employee may be required to sit and ride in a vehicle, safely drive to transport clients with appropriate coordination of hands, eyes, and feet in response to visual stimuli, and drive in varying weather conditions.
