Job description

Seasonal Stormwater Laborer
Position Summary
The Seasonal Stormwater Laborer provides hands-on support to the Stormwater Department during peak operational months. This position is primarily responsible for vegetation management and maintenance along drainage systems, ditches, rights-of-way, and stormwater infrastructure. The worker also assists with a variety of general labor tasks within the Stormwater Department and may support other departments as needed to ensure safe, efficient, and continuous city operations. Seasonal employees may also be eligible to apply for open full-time positions within the Stormwater Department or other city departments when they become available.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform vegetation cutting, trimming, and removal along:
  • Drainage ditches
  • Culverts and inlets
  • Detention/retention basins
  • Rights of way and easements
  • Operate and maintain equipment such as:
  • Weed trimmers, push mowers, brush cutters, and chain saws
  • Hand tools and basic power tools
  • Assist with debris removal from storm drains, grates, culverts, ditches, creeks, streams, and other stormwater structures.
  • Support stormwater field crews with routine maintenance tasks, including:
  • Cleaning and clearing blockages
  • Minor repairs to stormwater infrastructure
  • Loading, unloading, and organizing materials
  • May assist other city departments with general labor duties when operational needs require cross-departmental support.
  • Follow all safety procedures, PPE requirements, and departmental guidelines.
  • Report hazards, damaged infrastructure, or unusual conditions to supervisors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support overall stormwater and city operations.

Qualifications:
  • Ability to perform physical labor in outdoor environments, including heat, rain, uneven terrain, and vegetation-heavy areas.
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools and small equipment operations (training provided).
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Reliable attendance and willingness to work flexible hours as needed.
  • Valid driver's license preferred.

Physical Requirements:
  • Lift and carry up to 80lbs.
  • Walk long distances along ditches and rights of way.
  • Bend, stoop, kneel, and work in vegetation or debris-filled areas.
  • Operate equipment for extended periods.

Work Schedule:
  • Seasonal position; schedule may vary based on weather and operational needs.
  • Typical work hours: Monday-Friday, 7:30 am to 3:00 pm, with possible overtime.

Supervision:
Reports directly to the Stormwater Supervisors.
