Seasonal Guidance Navigation Control Engineer information

What does a seasonal guidance navigation control engineer do?

A Seasonal Guidance Navigation Control Engineer is responsible for designing, testing, and maintaining systems that control the guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) of vehicles such as aircraft, spacecraft, or autonomous vehicles, often on a temporary or project-specific basis. They work on tasks such as integrating sensors, developing control algorithms, and ensuring accurate navigation performance during seasonal or peak project periods. This role may also involve troubleshooting systems, performing simulations, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to achieve mission objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a seasonal guidance navigation control engineer?

To thrive as a Seasonal Guidance Navigation Control Engineer, you need a strong background in aerospace engineering, control systems, and applied mathematics, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation tools like MATLAB/Simulink, experience with embedded systems, and knowledge of navigation algorithms are highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability to project timelines, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure precise system performance, timely project delivery, and effective collaboration within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

What are some typical challenges faced by a seasonal guidance navigation control engineer during peak project periods?

Seasonal Guidance Navigation Control Engineers often encounter tight deadlines and higher workloads during peak project periods, such as testing cycles or launches. Managing multiple tasks, troubleshooting unexpected system behaviors, and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams under time pressure are common challenges. Effective communication and adaptability are essential, as priorities can shift rapidly based on project needs or test results. Engaging closely with software, hardware, and systems engineers ensures that integration and validation processes run smoothly.

Job description

Who We're Looking Forย

Quantum Space is redefining mobility and maneuverability in space. Our high-mobility spacecraft platforms support national security, civil, and commercial missions with unmatched flexibility and propulsion capability. We build fast and iterate quickly.ย

We are seeking aย Spacecraft Guidance, Navigation & Control Engineerย toย developย the algorithms, analyses, and flight capabilities that enable our spacecraft to navigate, maneuver, and operate autonomously across a diverse range of space missions.ย In this role, you willย own GNC subsystem development throughout the spacecraft lifecycle, including mission analysis, modeling and simulation, guidance, navigation, and control algorithm development, flight software integration, hardware integration and test, verification and validation, and on-orbit mission support.ย The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys solving complex technical challenges, and is passionate about building next-generation space systems that support mission success.ย

Where You'll Make an Impactย

  • Develop high-fidelity spacecraft dynamics and GNC simulation environments to support analysis, verification, and mission design.ย
  • Implement and tune control laws for attitude control, momentum management, orbit maneuvering, RPO, and station-keeping.ย
  • Perform state estimation design and analysis (EKF/UKF, sensor fusion, GPS/IMU, star tracker & sun sensor pipelines).ย
  • Support integration of GNC algorithms into flight software, including validation through unit test, SIL/HIL, and full-vehicle simulation.ย
  • Collaborate with avionics and sensor teams to define GNC-related ICDs, data flows, timing, and performance budgets.ย
  • Analyze both on-orbit and testbed telemetry to evaluate GNC performance and inform updates to algorithms and configuration.ย
  • Develop tools that improve autonomous maneuver planning, control margin analysis, and attitude/orbit estimation accuracy.ย
  • Support safe-mode and fault management logic development in partnership with FSW and systems engineering.ย
  • Work with the systems team to specify hardware components based on system requirements, and coordinate with vendors to acquire hardware thatย meetย program cost and schedule targets.ย
  • Develop and execute GNC hardware acceptance and performance test plans and procedures.ย
  • Participate in MCR/PDR/CDR, test readiness reviews, and support operations during early-orbit commissioning when needed.ย
  • Contribute to rapid iteration cycles that refine autonomy and maneuverability across successive spacecraft builds.ย

What It Takesย

  • B.S. or M.S. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or related field.ย
  • 3-8+ years of experience in spacecraft or high-reliability GNC development.ย
  • Strong foundation in rigid-body dynamics, orbital mechanics, and classical/modern control theory.ย
  • Experience implementing estimation and control algorithms in C++, Python, or MATLAB/Simulink.ย
  • Experience with sensor fusion for spacecraft-relevant sensors (IMUs, star trackers, sun sensors, GNSS, ranging sensors).ย
  • Familiarity with flight software integration, SIL/HIL testing, and simulation pipelines.ย
  • Ability to analyze telemetry, validate performance, and debug GNC-related anomalies.ย
  • Systems-level awareness across avionics, software, and dynamics.ย
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced, hardware-integrated environment with shifting priorities.ย

ย Nice-to-Have Experienceย

  • Experience with RPO, proximity operations, autonomous maneuver planning, or high-V vehicle dynamics.ย
  • Familiarity with MAX FSW and MAX GDS or other modern COTS flight software environments.ย
  • Experience with Monte Carlo analysis and large-scale mission simulation.ย
  • Experience with EKF variants, covariance analysis, or nonlinear control approaches.ย
  • Background with thruster-based ACS, high-agility control architectures, or propulsion-coupled dynamics.ย
  • Experience analyzing 6DOF models incorporating propellant slosh and flexible-body dynamics.ย
  • Hands-on experience with testbeds, HITL environments, or closed-loop simulation frameworks.ย
  • Experience with fault management logic,ย safingย modes, and on-orbit anomaly investigation.ย
  • Prior experience working in fast-paced startups orย NewSpaceย organizations. '

ย What You'll Getย

  • Ownership- Build and validate the GNC capability that defines how our spacecraft maneuver, point, and operate autonomously.ย
  • Innovation- Shape next-generation GNC architectures, algorithms, and tools for high-agility missions.ย
