Division/Department: Special Events

Job Title: Special Events Actor- North Pole

Reports To: Child Wrangler

Type of position: Non-Exempt / Hourly 

Employee Classification: Seasonal or Temporary, depending upon date of hire

Location: Whittier, NC 

Compensation: $7.25-$9.00 D.O.E. 

Job Summary: THE POLAR EXPRESS is a unique experience for children of all ages. It is magical and memorable. Things that make the magic and the memories are the elements GSMR provides that match the events described in the story. These include the engine, the cars, the lights, the music and cheerful employees. Bringing much of the book and movie to life is the job of our Special Events Actor. It is important for all Special Events Actors to know their duties and responsibilities and execute them in a timely and effective manner. Our goal is to present a quality experience to all THE POLAR EXPRESS guests.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Portray THE POLAR EXPRESS characters and story accurately by following a script. 
  • Complete a variety of logistical tasks as they pertain to the specific event you are working on.  
  • Responsible for learning and performing a choreographed routine.
  • Responsible for learning and following THE POLAR EXPRESS script throughout the event.
  • Responsible for adhering to acting standards.
  • Set up and break down the event you are scheduled to work on. 
  • Enthusiastically represents Great Smoky Mountains Railroad and THE POLAR EXPRESS brand.
  • Willingness to learn new things and function as part of an effective team. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Work Environment:

  • Will vary depending on the character(s) being portrayed, to include but not limited to on board a moving train, walking throughout cars, and/or stationary at the North Pole event site.
  • Level of direct engagement with the public varies based on performing role.

Education, Skill, and Work Experience Requirements:

  • Previous performance experience with THE POLAR EXPRESS TRAIN RIDE is preferred, but not required.
  • Previous theatrical experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Physical Characteristics: Aged: 8-13; height not exceeding 5 foot, 5 inches.
  • Must be able to portray Christmas spirit and always remain in character.
  • Be familiar with the story of THE POLAR EXPRESS.
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must possess organizational skill with the ability to multi-task while prioritizing workload.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule with night, weekend, and holiday hours.
  • Ability to push, pull, and carry a minimum of 20 pounds. 
  • Ability to stand, walk, sing, dance, kneel, crouch, and reach for an extended period on a moving train.
  • Detail-oriented, team player with excellent analytical and communication skills.
