What is a seasonal engineering intern?

A Seasonal Engineering Intern is a temporary position, typically held by college or university students during summer or winter breaks, where they gain hands-on experience in an engineering field. Interns work under the supervision of experienced engineers, assisting with projects, conducting research, and learning industry practices. This role allows students to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings, develop technical skills, and build professional networks. Seasonal internships often help students decide on their future career paths and may lead to full-time employment after graduation.

What types of projects or tasks can a seasonal engineering intern expect to work on during their internship?

Seasonal Engineering Interns typically get involved in a variety of hands-on and support tasks that align with ongoing projects within the engineering team. These may include assisting with data collection and analysis, drafting technical reports, supporting prototype testing, or working on CAD designs under the supervision of experienced engineers. Interns often collaborate with multiple departments, gaining exposure to both technical and project management aspects. This structure provides interns with practical experience and valuable insights into the day-to-day operations of professional engineering teams.

What key skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a seasonal engineering intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Seasonal Engineering Intern, you need a solid foundation in engineering principles, problem-solving skills, and enrollment in or completion of a relevant engineering degree program. Familiarity with industry-standard design and analysis software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or MATLAB is typically expected. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability help interns collaborate effectively and learn quickly in a professional setting. These skills and qualities ensure that interns can contribute meaningfully to projects, gain valuable experience, and support their teams during the internship.

What is the difference between Seasonal Engineering Intern vs Engineering Intern?

AspectSeasonal Engineering InternEngineering Intern
CredentialsTypically enrolled in an engineering degree program, may require specific courseworkSame as Seasonal Engineering Intern, often pursuing an undergraduate engineering degree
Work EnvironmentTemporary, project-based work often during summer or specific seasonsSimilar, may be year-round or seasonal depending on the company
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies in manufacturing, construction, or energy sectors for short-term rolesCommon across various engineering fields for internship programs

The main difference is that a Seasonal Engineering Intern works temporarily during specific seasons, often focusing on short-term projects, while an Engineering Intern may have a more flexible or year-round internship experience. Both roles typically require similar educational backgrounds and are used by companies to evaluate future full-time engineers.

Is it too late to apply for summer engineering internships?

Applying for a seasonal engineering intern position typically depends on the company's application deadlines, which often close several months before summer. Many programs accept applications in early spring, but some may still have openings or accept late applications if positions remain available. It is advisable to check the specific company's career page for current deadlines and opportunities.

Job description

INTERN @ SPACEWORKS

Are you passionate about aerospace? Do you go above and beyond to solve difficult challenges?

SpaceWorks is seeking college student interns for the Spring 2027 (January - April, dates flexible) to support several of our functional engineering teams. We are seeking students with experience and interest in various areas of aerospace engineering. Preferred focus areas for Spring 2027  include aerodynamics, aerothermal, flight performance, and software development.

Interns will work within a small team of engineers on the design, development, testing, and evaluation future spacecraft, small satellites, reentry capsules, and hypersonic flight systems. We are passionate about what we do and we’re looking for someone with a keen interest in high-speed flight, aircraft, rockets, small satellites, and/or space exploration. We work with sponsors at the Department of War, NASA, and other organizations, partnering to develop a range of advanced technologies. Given the nature of our work, US Person status is required. The position is located 100% onsite at our Atlanta, GA office and is a seasonal, full-time (hourly) position.

**Application will close at 5pm on August 24th**

A DAY IN THE LIFE
