Purpose and Summary
Build Safer Roads. Keep Communities Moving.
Sheboygan County is seeking hardworking, safety-focused individuals to support seasonal and as-needed highway maintenance operations. In this role, you'll help keep county roads safe and well-maintained through snow and ice removal, roadway maintenance, equipment operation, construction support, and infrastructure repair.

Essential Duties
As part of our highway maintenance team, you will operate and maintain a wide variety of equipment and assist with seasonal road and infrastructure projects throughout the county. Responsibilities include:
Winter Operations
  • Operate snowplows, graders, loaders, sanders/salters, Oshkosh trucks, and related equipment
  • Perform snow and ice removal, bridge cleaning, and drift prevention
  • Install, repair, and remove snow fencing
  • Maintain drainage systems and steam frozen culverts
  • Prepare and maintain winter maintenance equipment

Summer Operations
  • Haul materials for paving, ditching, milling, and seal coating projects
  • Perform pothole repair, culvert replacement, shouldering, crack filling, and blacktop repair
  • Conduct mowing, brush and tree removal, sweeping, landscaping, and roadside maintenance
  • Assist with traffic control setup, lane closures, detours, and work zone safety

Equipment & Facility Maintenance
  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment including graders, bulldozers, backhoes, tractors, and paving equipment
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and tools
  • Support crusher, asphalt plant, and centerline painting operations
  • Assist with building maintenance, repairs, and painting

Team & Safety Responsibilities
  • Follow all roadway safety standards and Department policies
  • Inspect roadways and report maintenance concerns
  • Read and interpret construction plans and specifications
  • Fill in for supervisors or foremen as needed
  • Work collaboratively across crews and operations

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A, B, C, or D
  • Ability to obtain N endorsement
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Strong commitment to workplace and roadway safety
Preferred Skills & Experience
  • Experience operating heavy equipment or construction machinery
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance, paving, or snow removal operations
  • Familiarity with traffic control and work zone safety
  • Mechanical aptitude and equipment maintenance experience

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This position works in both indoor and outdoor environments year-round, including construction sites and roadways. Employees must be able to:
  • Frequently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds
  • Work in varying weather conditions and temperatures
  • Stand, walk, climb, kneel, crouch, and operate heavy equipment for extended periods
  • Work flexible hours including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency weather events
