Position Overview
This position is accountable for assisting the District Laboratory Supervisor in conducting and supervising laboratory testing of all soils, aggregates, Portland Cement Concrete (PCC), and Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA) samples used in the construction and maintenance of various federal and state funded highways and other structures. This position ensures that all tested materials conform to the requirements of the current Standard Specifications for road and bridge construction, supplemental specifications and special provisions. It is also accountable for the calibrations, operation, and maintenance of various laboratory equipment used for material testing and laboratory inspections.
Essential Functions
  • Ensures that samples received are tested and reported with completeness, accuracy, and timeliness.
  • Maintains familiarity with the latest changes in specifications and testing procedures to ensure effective recording or plotting test findings.
  • Assists the Geotechnical Engineer, Physical Tests Engineer, and Mixture Control Engineer with various highly complicated tests.
  • Supervises the laboratory in the absence of the District Laboratory Supervisor.
  • Issues, receives, repairs, and calibrates field testing equipment consistent with the Illinois Department of Transportation Manual of Test Procedures.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS five months of engineering experience; OR six years of engineering experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of materials testing and laboratory testing equipment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of terms and concepts for Quality Control/Quality Assurance (QC/QA) for Concrete and Quality Management Program (QMP) for Hot-Mix Asphalt.
  • Ability to operate physical laboratory testing equipment.
  • Problem solving skills.

Conditions of Employment
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Successfully completed or be able to successfully complete the IDOT Quality Management Training Program courses CET 020 Mixture Aggregate Technician (3 days), CET 029 Hot-Mix Asphalt Level 1 (5 days), CET 030 Portland Cement Concrete Level 1 (3 days), and the IDOT Specific Task Training Program Course S-33 Soils Field Testing and Inspection within 24 months of appointment to the position.
  • Occasional districtwide travel and frequent travel to Missouri laboratories which may include overnight stays.
  • Seasonal shiftwork may be possible.
  • Ability to perform heavy and repetitive lifting of up to 50 lbs.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
  • Successful completion of a background screening.
