Job Summary
The Department of Sociology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst https://www.umass.edu/sociology/ is seeking to build a pool of non-tenure track adjunct faculty members who can teach one or two on-campus, in-person courses for the Department during the Spring 2027 semester, or future academic term(s). The possibility of teaching additional courses in future semesters is dependent upon funding, departmental instructional need and candidate availability. The Department is seeking candidates with experience in teaching Sociology and related courses. Potential courses for the academic year may include large introductory courses, statistics, and specialized courses in the areas of race and racism, deviance, and gender.
Essential Functions
Workload will consist of:
Teaching undergraduate sociology course(s)
Mentoring/advising undergraduates
Maintaining your Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) certification each semester.
Contacting the Department Chair within 24 hours with any student concerns or issues.
Checking UMass email every 24 business hours during the semester you are teaching.
Responding to UMass student email within 24 business hours.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Sociology or a related field, or a master's with commensurate professional experience. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to work with diverse populations and experience mentoring/advising undergraduates. Working Conditions
Work is performed in a standard office or indoor university environment and involves minimal physical exertion.
Work Schedule and Work Arrangement
Teaching schedules may vary from one semester to another, depending on program needs, resource availability, and enrollment demand. The Department Chair and Academic Program Manager will assign workloads and schedules each semester.
Salary Information
Total salary $8,195 per course
