What does a Scrum Master do?

A scrum master is an information technology (IT) professional who helps manage information exchange among their team in an Agile environment. A scrum master is not the leader of a team. They are the facilitator of exchanges and interactions with the team. They help build consensus regarding next steps on the team, keep everyone on task following the agreed upon rules, and do everything they can to maximize the team’s performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Scrum Master, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Scrum Master, you need a solid understanding of Agile methodologies, Scrum framework, and often a relevant certification such as Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or Professional Scrum Master (PSM). Familiarity with project management tools like Jira, Trello, or Azure DevOps is typically required. Excellent facilitation, communication, and conflict resolution skills help Scrum Masters guide teams and foster collaboration. These skills and qualities are crucial for enabling high-performing teams, ensuring effective delivery, and continuously improving processes within Agile environments.

Job description

At HCL Technologies we work as true partners with both our employees and our clients, embodying our number one value: People First. Our team is driven by a desire to always learn, improve, and innovate. We take an open-minded approach to opportunities and challenges and are focused on solving business challenges.
We deliver programs and projects that exceed stakeholder expectations. To be successful here, you will be a driver with a flexible working style and excellent communication skills; you will think strategically and act tactically.
The Technical Scrum Master is responsible for facilitating the day-to-day running of an Agile team and ensuring that progress is visible to all key stakeholders. They ensure that the team functions as effectively as possible and protects the team from external impacts.
Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the team follows the values and principles of Agile and apply the SAFe framework appropriately.
  • Ensure transparency on team activities including sprints, velocity, risks, team and stakeholder happiness.
  • Deliver integrated change across multiple Development Centers.
  • Ensure quality is driven into all aspects of the delivery lifecycle and defects are driven out as early as possible.
  • Work in partnership with Run teams to ensure long term integrity and maintainability of our software assets.
  • Management and control of resources and suppliers ensuring that supply and capability meets agreed commitments including engagement or engineering initiatives.

This is a facilitative leadership role. The Scrum Master should seek to promote self-organization within the team, i.e. the team collectively optimizes itself to achieve the defined Sprint and project goals, rather than the Scrum Master acting as authority and coordinator. The Scrum Master takes ownership that the right things are happening, preferably not ownership of the activities themselves.
Requirements:
  • 5+ years of experience in Software Delivery; software development and release
  • Strong knowledge of software engineering process.
  • Experience working in the healthcare insurance domain; familiarity with healthcare insurance products, technology solutions and services
  • Experience with building and growing cross-functional distributed Agile teams and transforming organizations
  • Ability to inspire individuals and teams to change and improve
  • Excellent communication, presentation, influencing and facilitation skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work with and influence leaders at all levels of the organization.
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of Agile values and principles and how to apply these in a complex, highly regulated environment
  • In depth knowledge of Scrum and Kanban, and a working knowledge of other Agile frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of the SDLC and delivery/project management tools and techniques.
  • Experience in coaching and delivering training within the agile framework (portfolio, program, and team)
