What does a Scrum Master do?

A scrum master is an information technology (IT) professional who helps manage information exchange among their team in an Agile environment. A scrum master is not the leader of a team. They are the facilitator of exchanges and interactions with the team. They help build consensus regarding next steps on the team, keep everyone on task following the agreed upon rules, and do everything they can to maximize the team’s performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Scrum Master, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Scrum Master, you need a solid understanding of Agile methodologies, Scrum framework, and often a relevant certification such as Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or Professional Scrum Master (PSM). Familiarity with project management tools like Jira, Trello, or Azure DevOps is typically required. Excellent facilitation, communication, and conflict resolution skills help Scrum Masters guide teams and foster collaboration. These skills and qualities are crucial for enabling high-performing teams, ensuring effective delivery, and continuously improving processes within Agile environments.

Job description

About the Organization
Now is a great time to join Redhorse Corporation. We are a solution-driven company delivering data insights and technology solutions to customers with missions critical to U.S. national interests. We're looking for thoughtful, skilled professionals who thrive as trusted partners building technology-agnostic solutions and want to apply their talents supporting customers with difficult and important mission sets.

About the Role

Redhorse transforms the way government uses data and technology. To support this mission, we are seeking a Senior Scrum Master who serves as a recognized expert in guiding high-complexity technical teams. In this role, you will do more than just facilitate meetings; you will be the strategic lead for the product lifecycle of sophisticated information systems, ranging from telecommunications to modeling and simulation. Your expertise will ensure that Agile quality practices are integrated into the architecture of our nation's most critical networking and automation systems, directly impacting Redhorse's mission to modernize government operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Execute comprehensive Scrum methodologies across the entire product lifecycle for complex systems.
  • Guide and mentor multidisciplinary teams in Agile methodology, ensuring adherence to team rules and mission goals.
  • Facilitate all Agile ceremonies and meetings, proactively identifying and eliminating blockers to maintain team velocity.
  • Analyze user needs to determine functional requirements and define complex problems within information systems architecture.
  • Develop strategic plans and requirements for systems involving networking, telecommunications, and automation.
  • Manage software development methodologies and lifecycle management for modeling and simulation projects.
  • Perform functional allocation to identify required tasks and their interrelationships across the enterprise.
  • Identify and advocate for the resources required for each task to ensure successful project execution.
  • Promote Agile quality practices and risk management/electronic analysis to ensure robust system performance.
  • Maintain a level of expertise recognized by the professional community to serve as a designated expert for government task orders.
Required Experience/Clearance
  • Active TS/SCI with CI Polygraph
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.
  • 20+ years of experience in Information Technology (IT) and related technical fields.
  • Demonstrated experience with both modern and legacy technologies related to networking and communications protocols.
  • Proven track record of managing complex software development methodologies and systems architecture.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present technical plans to senior government stakeholders.
Desired Experience
We encourage all candidates who meet the basic requirements to apply, even if you do not have any of the following experience:
  • Advanced Agile certifications such as Certified Scrum Professional (CSP) or SAFe Release Train Engineer (RTE).
  • Experience with Redhorse-specific tools like Jira, GitLab, or Databricks.
  • Background in modeling and simulation within a DoD or Intelligence Community context.
  • Experience in risk management and electronic analysis for secure communications.
  • Prior experience working on FFP or IDIQ contract task orders.
$250,000 - $280,000 a year
The salary range provided for this position represents the anticipated base salary for successful candidates. Actual compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors, including relevant experience, education, certifications, skills, security clearance level, geographic location, market conditions, and internal equity. In addition to base salary, eligible employees may participate in Redhorse's comprehensive benefits programs and may be eligible for performance-based or other incentive compensation, where applicable.
