Scrum Master Software Engineer information

What is a Scrum Master Software Engineer?

A Scrum Master Software Engineer is a professional who combines the technical skills of a software engineer with the leadership and facilitation responsibilities of a Scrum Master. This role involves guiding a software development team in following Agile and Scrum methodologies, helping to remove obstacles, and ensuring effective collaboration and communication within the team. In addition to writing and reviewing code, a Scrum Master Software Engineer organizes sprints, leads meetings, and works to continuously improve team processes. The goal is to deliver high-quality software products efficiently while maintaining a positive and productive team environment.

How does a Scrum Master Software Engineer balance coding responsibilities with facilitating Agile processes within their team?

A Scrum Master Software Engineer typically divides their time between hands-on software development tasks and serving as the Agile facilitator for their team. This means they not only contribute code and participate in technical decision-making, but also lead daily stand-ups, remove impediments, and ensure the team adheres to Scrum principles. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong time management, clear communication, and the ability to prioritize the team's needs over individual tasks. This dual role fosters close collaboration with product owners, engineers, and stakeholders, creating a dynamic work environment focused on both technical excellence and continuous improvement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Scrum Master Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Scrum Master Software Engineer, you need a solid background in software development, agile methodologies, and a relevant degree or certification like Certified ScrumMaster (CSM). Familiarity with Agile tools such as Jira, Confluence, Git, and CI/CD systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, facilitation, and problem-solving skills help foster collaboration and guide teams through challenges. These competencies are vital for driving project success, maintaining agile best practices, and enabling high-performing development teams.

What is the difference between Scrum Master Software Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectScrum Master Software EngineerSoftware Developer

Required SkillsAgile methodologies, communication, problem-solvingProgramming languages, software design, debugging
CertificationsScrum Master certification, Agile certificationsNone specific, but certifications like Java, AWS may be relevant

While a Scrum Master Software Engineer focuses on facilitating Agile processes and team support, a Software Developer primarily concentrates on creating and maintaining software applications. Both roles often work closely in tech projects but serve different functions within the development lifecycle.

Can a Scrum Master Software Engineer become a Scrum Master?

A Scrum Master Software Engineer can transition to a Scrum Master role by gaining relevant certifications such as Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) and developing skills in facilitation, coaching, and Agile practices. Prior experience in Agile teams and understanding of Scrum frameworks are valuable for making this transition.

Is Scrum Master Software Engineer still in demand?

Scrum Master Software Engineers are in high demand as organizations adopt Agile methodologies to improve project management and product delivery. Skills in Scrum, Agile frameworks, and tools like Jira increase employability, and demand is expected to grow with the continued emphasis on collaborative and iterative development environments.

Job Description:
Scrum Master
Location: Greenwood Village, CO
Onsite Requirement: 3 days onsite, 2 days remote per week
Duration: Long-term contract with potential for extension/conversion
Compensation: $50-70/hr
About the Opportunity
We're seeking an experienced Scrum Master to support a growing software engineering organization undergoing a large-scale platform modernization initiative. This role will partner closely with development leads, product ownership, and business stakeholders to facilitate Agile delivery across multiple high-performing engineering teams.
This is an ideal opportunity for someone who thrives in a mature Agile environment and enjoys driving team effectiveness through facilitation, coordination, servant leadership, and data-driven insights. The position is heavily focused on Agile execution, team coaching, Jira reporting, and stakeholder communication rather than traditional project management.
What You'll Do
  • Facilitate Scrum ceremonies including Sprint Planning, Daily Standups, Backlog Refinement, Sprint Reviews, and Retrospectives
  • Support multiple software development teams and help drive delivery of strategic platform modernization initiatives
  • Identify, track, and remove blockers that impact team productivity and sprint commitments
  • Partner with Product Owners, Development Leads, and business stakeholders to improve team alignment and delivery outcomes
  • Help development teams obtain business clarifications and resolve cross-functional dependencies
  • Drive continuous improvement while respecting established team practices and culture
  • Generate Jira-based reporting (JQL), dashboards, and metrics for engineering leadership
  • Create weekly and monthly delivery reports and respond to ad hoc leadership reporting requests
  • Monitor Agile metrics and provide insights into team health, velocity, and delivery performance
  • Foster collaboration across geographically distributed teams
Required Qualifications
  • 5-10+ years of Scrum Master experience supporting software engineering teams
  • Deep understanding of Scrum principles, Agile methodologies, and SDLC processes
  • Experience facilitating Agile ceremonies in mature Agile environments
  • Advanced Jira expertise, including strong JQL (Jira Query Language) skills
  • Experience creating executive-level dashboards, reports, and delivery metrics
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Ability to influence teams through collaboration and coaching rather than authority
  • Experience supporting multiple Agile teams simultaneously
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous software development or technical background
  • Experience working within large enterprise environments
  • Exposure to SAFe, Kanban, and Scrum
  • Scrum certifications (CSM, PSM, SAFe Scrum Master, etc.)
  • Prior project management experience
  • Experience supporting telecommunications, technology, or highly regulated industries
What We're Looking For
The successful candidate will be a pragmatic Agile leader who understands how to work within an established organization. We are looking for someone who:
  • Builds trust and credibility with development teams
  • Coaches and influences without being overly prescriptive
  • Understands team dynamics and fosters collaboration
  • Takes time to learn existing processes before recommending improvements
  • Balances Agile best practices with real-world business needs
  • Is highly responsive and comfortable supporting leadership reporting needs
  • Can effectively communicate with technical teams, product leadership, and business stakeholders

If you're a Scrum Master who enjoys partnering with engineering teams, driving Agile excellence, and using data to improve delivery outcomes, we'd love to hear from you.
