What is a scrub?

A Scrub job typically refers to a healthcare position, often in surgical settings, where the individual assists surgeons and medical teams by maintaining a sterile environment, handling surgical instruments, and ensuring patient safety during procedures. Scrub techs or surgical technologists work alongside nurses and doctors to prepare operating rooms and support medical staff. They play a critical role in infection control and efficient surgical operations.

What does a scrub do in an operating room?

A typical day for a Scrub involves preparing the operating room, arranging surgical instruments and supplies, assisting the surgical team during procedures by passing instruments, and maintaining a sterile environment throughout operations. Scrubs actively anticipate the needs of surgeons, manage specimen handling, and help with post-operative cleanup and equipment restocking. They work closely with registered nurses, surgeons, and anesthesia providers to ensure smooth surgical workflows. The environment is fast-paced and team-oriented, requiring diligence, communication, and flexibility to adapt to the needs of each unique procedure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a scrub?

To thrive as a Scrub (Surgical Technologist), you need in-depth knowledge of sterile techniques, surgical procedures, and human anatomy, usually attained through completion of an accredited surgical technology program and certification (such as CST). Familiarity with surgical instruments, sterilization equipment, and operating room protocols is essential. Attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to stay calm under pressure are key soft skills for success. These skills ensure patient safety, efficient surgery flow, and effective support to surgeons and operating room staff.
