Script Writing information

What qualifications do I need to be a script writer?

To become a script writer, a strong command of language, storytelling skills, and knowledge of script formatting are essential. A bachelor's degree in film, theater, creative writing, or a related field is often preferred, along with experience in writing, editing, and familiarity with industry tools like Final Draft or Celtx.

How do script writers typically collaborate with directors and producers during a project?

Script writers often work closely with directors and producers throughout the development and production process. After submitting a draft, writers may participate in meetings to discuss revisions based on creative direction, budget, or logistical constraints. Open communication and flexibility are essential, as scripts frequently evolve to align with the director's vision and production needs. This collaboration ensures the final script serves the story while being feasible to produce, offering writers valuable insights and professional growth.

How much do script writers get paid?

Script writers' salaries vary based on experience, industry, and project type. Entry-level writers may earn around $30,000 to $50,000 annually, while experienced professionals can make $100,000 or more, especially in television and film. Freelance script writers often negotiate per-project rates or royalties.

What is script writing?

Script writing is the process of creating written works that outline the dialogue, actions, and directions for productions such as films, television shows, plays, or video content. Script writers develop the story structure, characters, and settings, ensuring that the script conveys the intended message and emotions. This process often involves multiple drafts, collaboration with directors and producers, and adherence to specific formatting guidelines. Script writing is crucial for guiding actors and production teams in bringing a story to life.

How much do you get paid for writing a script?

Script writers' pay varies based on experience, project type, and industry. Freelance script writers typically earn between $30 and $150 per hour, while those working on television or film projects may be paid per project or receive a salary, often ranging from $50,000 to over $100,000 annually for experienced professionals.

What Are Script Writing Jobs?

Script writing jobs focus on creating general written content for the production of a video. This could take the form of a screenplay, copywriting for an advertisement, or even content for a video game. As a script writer, your job is to help deliver the story that your client wants to tell. To accomplish this, you decide the best way to deliver the content, create a storyboard to pitch the idea, and then write the actual script. Script writers are often given a lot of freedom when creating content, so creativity is crucial to your success. Script writing jobs also take place in a deadline-driven environment, so the ability to finish your work on time is essential.

Do you have a passion for storytelling and educating? Are you knowledgeable about financial markets and economics, with the skill to talk about them in simple, clear terms? Do you thrive in a culture of trust, teamwork and accountability?

Voya Investment Management is seeking an experienced investment writer who has the talent, judgment and motivation to be a strong contributor and leader within the marketing team.

Position Overview

Voya Investment Management is seeking an experienced investment writer to fill a recently vacated position and develop thought leadership and market-facing content. This role will focus primarily on fixed income, multi-asset/DC solutions, and private equity, with secondary support for CIO/macro insights and selected public equity topics. The position works closely with channel marketing, investment teams, client portfolio managers, product specialists, distribution leaders and graphic designers to shape relevant, well-supported content across written, visual, and digital formats.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner across teams to craft written and visual content such as thought leadership, market insights, email copy, video scripts, and sales-support materials.
  • Identify strong content opportunities, sharpen angles, and frame ideas around what matters to the intended audience.
  • Build working expertise in priority coverage areas and apply sound editorial instincts in how ideas are structured and expressed.

Qualifications

  • 7-10+ years of experience writing about investments, markets, economics, or asset allocation within asset management, wealth management, financial media, or a related field.
  • Strong familiarity with fixed income, multi-asset, alternatives, and retirement-related markets.
  • Demonstrated ability to create content for financial professional, institutional, and end-investor audiences.
  • Experience across multiple formats, including long- and short-form writing, storytelling with data, and digital content; video scripting is a plus.
  • Bachelor's degree required; CFA or progress toward CFA is a plus.

Characteristics Important to Success

  • Strong editorial instincts and the ability to find the most relevant angle in a topic.
  • Investigative mindset and intellectual curiosity; asks thoughtful questions and learns new subjects quickly.
  • Fact- and context-driven approach to storytelling.
  • Ability to navigate complex stakeholder situations with professionalism and tact.

Success in the Role

Success will be defined by the ability to produce credible, audience-relevant content in priority coverage areas; strengthen how key ideas are expressed across formats; and become a trusted partner through consistent execution, subject-matter curiosity, and strong editorial craft.

Please Note: As part of the application process, please submit an example of your work, specifically a writing sample. Please outline your involvement and responsibilities in the end product of this sample.
