How much do script reader jobs pay per hour?
What is a script reader?
What does a script reader do?
As a script reader, your primary duties are to read, review, and provide coverage analysis and detailed notes of scripts. Typically, when a writer sends an agent or a studio a new screenplay, it is first screened by a script reader. Your responsibilities are to assess whether the script may be a viable film option for the agent or producer. You may choose to reject the screenplay or send the script to the agent or producer. If you work at an agency, the ultimate goal is either for the agent to sign the screenwriter and sell the script, or for the agent to attach their own talent to the screenplay and persuade a producer or studio to make the film. At a studio, the producer advocates for the script rather than the agent.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a script reader, and why are they important?
What are some common challenges faced by script readers, and how can they be managed?
What is the difference between Script Reader vs Script Supervisor?
| Aspect | Script Reader | Script Supervisor |
|---|---|---|
| Required credentials | Film/TV writing or related experience, sometimes a degree in film or screenwriting | Experience in film/TV production, often with a background in editing or continuity |
| Work environment | Office, studio, or production company; primarily reading and evaluating scripts | On-set during filming, overseeing continuity and script adherence |
| Employer and industry usage | Studios, production companies, agencies, and independent filmmakers | Film and TV production sets, studios, and post-production facilities |
| Common search and comparison intent | Understanding script evaluation roles | Understanding on-set roles related to script management |
The main difference is that a Script Reader reviews and evaluates scripts to advise on their potential, while a Script Supervisor manages continuity and script details during filming. Both roles are essential in the production process but serve different functions within the industry.

Position Summary
This is a non-benefited position not to exceed 1,000 hours in a calendar year.
The Teaching and Learning Sciences Department at Morgridge College of Education utilizes an integrated approach of theory and practice to be a force for positive change in the educational lives of individuals, organizations, and communities. Professionals promote learning in diverse settings, through partnerships with others, and by engaging in high-quality research within our respective fields
This part-time position supports a federally funded research study by delivering targeted reading and behavioral support to second- and third-grade students in a small group setting. The role calls for approximately 20 hours per week during normal school hours, with occasional travel between school sites depending on assignment. Mileage to and from school sites is reimbursed at the federal government standard mileage rate.
Reliability, attention to detail, and a genuine interest in helping young learners grow are essential to success in this role.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone seeking hands-on experience with working directly with elementary-age students, delivering structured reading and behavioral interventions, and contributing to meaningful, data-driven educational research.
This position is funded by a grant through 08/31/2029, and there is no guarantee of a position after that date. This position is contingent upon those grant funds being appropriated.
The interventionist will report directly to the research project coordinator and principal investigator and will receive ongoing mentorship and supervision throughout the duration of the project. Regular one-on-one meetings will be scheduled to support professional development.
Essential Functions
- Deliver small-group and individual reading and behavioral interventions to students in grades 2 and 3 in strict accordance with the study's prescribed curriculum, scripts, and pacing guides.
- Implement intervention sessions with high fidelity, following all specified procedures and sequencing as outlined in the research protocol.
- Maintain detailed, accurate, and timely session logs, attendance records, and progress-monitoring data for every student served.
- Administer standardized assessments and progress-monitoring measures according to specified protocols and timelines, ensuring accurate scoring and data entry.
- Complete fidelity checklists and self-monitoring documentation for each session to support ongoing fidelity-of-implementation tracking required by the study.
- Participate in regular fidelity observations, coaching sessions, and booster trainings, and implement feedback to maintain adherence to the intervention model.
- Collect, organize, and submit all required data (attendance, assessment, behavioral) to the research team by established deadlines, following data security and confidentiality protocols.
- Communicate and coordinate with classroom teachers, school staff, and the research team regarding student scheduling and progress.
- Monitor and document student behavior using specified behavioral tracking tools, implementing behavior support strategies consistent with the intervention design.
- Safeguard the integrity of the study by maintaining strict confidentiality of student data, adhering to IRB requirements, and reporting any protocol deviations or data concerns promptly to the principal investigator or project coordinator.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of structured, evidence-based reading instruction and behavioral intervention strategies, with the ability to implement a prescribed curriculum with fidelity
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to maintain accurate session logs, progress-monitoring data, and fidelity documentation
- Ability to build rapport and manage behavior effectively with young students individually and in small groups, while maintaining focus and consistency across sessions
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in education, special education, psychology, speech-language pathology, or a related field
- Experience working with elementary-aged students, particularly those with or at risk for reading difficulties or learning disabilities
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to manage multiple responsibilities and maintain detailed records
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or graduate coursework in special education, reading/literacy, educational psychology, or a related field
- Experience delivering structured literacy or reading intervention, such as in a tutoring, coaching, interventionist, or paraprofessional capacity
