Job description

Slate is hiring a paid audience engagement intern to help grow our social video audience. Ideal candidates think strategically about connecting with users across social platforms (from YouTube and TikTok to Instagram and beyond), both to expand Slate's reach and deepen our relationship with existing followers. They have a newsy sensibility; know how to edit short-form video; write compelling copy; think creatively about how to engage scrolling audiences; have ideas for accessing new audiences; and are able to use analytics to guide strategy.

The audience engagement intern will be able to help identify how digital media trends are evolving and have a desire to experiment with new strategies and test those instincts. They will work across teams, interacting with writers and editors on the site side, as well as producers and hosts on the podcast side, and our art and video teams.

While this role has a primary focus on social video, the audience engagement intern will also have the opportunity to develop skills in audience strategy more broadly, touching on everything from podcast promotion to newsletters to Reddit engagement.

Slate has offices in New York and D.C. This role will be based out of one of those offices.

The pay is minimum wage, and work is 35 to 40 hours a week.

This role has a flexible start date in May or early June, and will last for three months.

Key responsibilities
  • Develop concepts for social-first videos using Slate's existing website and podcast content
  • Shoot and edit original video (interest in appearing on camera is a plus but not required)
  • Adapt long-form video from Slate's podcast network into shorter segments for YouTube (shorts and clips) and clips for social platforms like Instagram and TikTok
  • Collaborate with teams and individuals across Slate
  • Use analytics to measure success and strategize for maximum reach and engagement
  • Assist in managing the strategy and scheduling of existing social media accounts and help shape the voice of Slate's feeds
  • Work with other editors on the audience development team to plan and execute creative initiatives for growing our site and podcast audiences
Requirements
  • Experience in creating short-form video for a publication or brand
  • Social media experience
  • Knowledge of Slate, its voice, and its place within the media and podcast landscape
  • An interest in working closely with the rest of Slate, whether it's working with our video editor to identify moments for clipping, framing a cover story with an editor for social distribution, or collaborating with a podcast host on a short-form script
  • The ability to write clean, clear copy with a light touch and wit where needed
  • A desire to work cooperatively on projects and teach others what you know
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral
  • Smarts, kindness, humor, and generosity, all of which will help you work well with smart, kind, funny, generous colleagues
Preferred
  • Audio promo experience
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices and experience
  • Graphic-design experience
