To thrive in Script Coverage, you need strong analytical reading skills, a deep understanding of screenwriting principles, and an ability to succinctly evaluate scripts, typically supported by a degree in film studies, English, or related fields. Familiarity with script management software like Final Draft, tracking boards, and coverage templates is highly valued. These abilities are crucial for helping studios and production companies efficiently identify promising material and guide development decisions.

What is a Script Coverage job?

A Script Coverage job involves reading and analyzing screenplays, then providing a structured report that includes a summary, comments, and a recommendation for producers, agents, or executives. Coverage helps decision-makers quickly assess whether a script is worth pursuing. Readers evaluate elements like plot, structure, character development, and dialogue. These roles are common in production companies, literary agencies, and studios, often serving as entry-level positions in the film industry. Strong analytical skills and knowledge of storytelling are essential for success in this role.

What does a typical day look like for someone in a Script Coverage role?

A typical day for someone providing Script Coverage involves reading and analyzing one or more scripts or screenplays, then writing detailed reports that include a summary, analysis of strengths and weaknesses, and a recommendation for development executives. You may work independently, but frequent communication with story editors, producers, and other analysts is common to ensure your coverage aligns with project goals. Deadlines can be tight, especially during pilot or development seasons, so time management and efficiency are essential. This role offers valuable exposure to the decision-making process within film and TV production, and opportunities for advancement into story editing, creative executive positions, or development roles.
