What is a scribe?

Scribes are professionals who assist healthcare providers by documenting patient encounters in real-time during medical visits. They enter information into electronic health records (EHRs), including patient histories, exam findings, test results, and treatment plans, allowing the provider to focus more on patient care. Scribes help improve workflow efficiency and accuracy in documentation, ultimately enhancing the quality of healthcare delivery. Their role is vital in reducing the administrative burden on clinicians and ensuring that medical records are complete and up-to-date.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a scribe, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Scribe, you need strong typing skills, attention to detail, and a good understanding of medical terminology, often supported by postsecondary education or specialized training. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems and medical documentation software is typically required. Excellent listening skills, discretion, and the ability to multitask under pressure help a Scribe excel in fast-paced clinical environments. These competencies ensure accurate and efficient documentation, supporting healthcare providers in delivering timely and effective patient care.

What are some common challenges faced by medical scribes, and how can they be overcome?

Medical scribes often face the challenge of keeping up with fast-paced clinical environments, accurately documenting patient encounters in real time, and adapting to different providers' preferences for charting. To overcome these challenges, it's important to develop strong typing and multitasking skills, become familiar with medical terminology, and establish clear communication with healthcare providers. Many scribes also benefit from ongoing training and feedback, which helps them improve efficiency and accuracy over time.

Job description

Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner (Nights)
Citizens Memorial Hospital | Bolivar, Missouri
CMH opened a new 29-bed emergency department in April 2026, built for improved patient flow and experience. This is a night-shift APP role in that department, working alongside emergency medicine physicians with a 24/7 in-house hospitalist team and surgical and sub-specialty backup.
About CMH
Citizens Memorial Hospital is an independent rural health system serving more than 130,000 residents across eight counties in Southwest Missouri. More than 250 physicians practice here, and CMH ranks in the top 10 percent nationally for physician satisfaction, which tells you something about what it is like to work here at 2am when the department gets busy.
The Opportunity
Daily ED volumes have run steadily in the 60s and 70s and are now surging into the 90s. This position exists because of that growth. The department was expanded to absorb it, and the staffing model is being built to match.
  • Twelve 12-hour night shifts per month, 8p to 8a
  • Newly expanded 29-bed emergency department
  • 24/7 in-house hospitalist team
  • Strong surgical and sub-specialty support
  • Experienced nursing and tech staffing
  • EMR: Meditech Expanse
  • AI Scribe: Suki
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation is structured to keep clinicians here long-term. Salary is discussed directly and transparently during the recruitment conversation.
  • Sign-on bonus and relocation assistance
  • Malpractice insurance
  • 403(b) retirement with CMH match
  • Health, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Annual CME allowance
  • PSLF eligible employer with in-house loan concierge support
Life in Bolivar
Bolivar is a town of about 11,000 in the Missouri Ozarks. Affordable, low-traffic, genuinely safe. Springfield is 30 minutes south when you want a city, Kansas City is under 2.5 hours, and there is a regional airport 25 minutes away. Good schools, and enough lakes, trails, and rivers that the people who stay here usually stay for that reason.
Requirements
  • PA or NP
  • Missouri licensure or eligibility
  • Emergency medicine experience preferred
