Film, Television, and Media, Associate Professor, University of Michigan
The Department of Film, Television, and Media at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position to teach in the screenwriting field to begin August 25, 2027. This is a university year appointment and will be at the level of Associate Professor, with tenure.
The Department of Film, Television, and Media offers a variety of courses in screenwriting and television writing that build on the University of Michigan's long and distinguished dramatic writing tradition. With a team of talented and produced screenwriters as lecturers and a variety of unique resources (including a vast library of scripts in the Donald Hall Collection, the James Gindin Visiting Artist Series, and the Peter and Barbara Benedek Artist in Residence Program), the Screenwriting sub major at Michigan provides students with a unique opportunity to learn from accomplished teachers and an array of A-List Hollywood and Independent artists.
Qualifications
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will teach upper-level screenwriting courses and electives, direct the Screenwriting Program, maintain an active record of writing and production, and contribute to the self-governance of the Department and the College.
Required Qualifications:
MFA or equivalent
Strong record of produced and optioned work
Extensive teaching experience at a major university
Evidence of leadership experience
Demonstrated commitment to program building/fundraising

Materials should include a cover letter, current curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy and experience, samples of creative work (a maximum of 40 written pages and/or links or files of creative work produced), teaching evaluations and other evidence of teaching excellence, and contact information for three letter recommenders. Letters will be requested after the first round of review.
Review of dossiers will begin on November 1, 2026; applications received after October 30, 2026 may not receive full consideration.
Employment will require both a successful criminal background check and an institutional reference check regarding any misconduct. Candidates will be required to submit a self-disclosure form as well as an authorization to release information form, and must meet all degree requirements prior to the start date of the position.
