Screening Officer information

What is a screening officer?

Screening officers are security professionals responsible for inspecting people, luggage, and cargo to detect prohibited items and ensure safety in places like airports, government buildings, and other secure facilities. They use equipment such as X-ray machines, metal detectors, and manual searches to screen individuals and belongings. Screening officers must follow strict protocols to identify threats while maintaining professionalism and respecting privacy. Their work plays a crucial role in public safety and the smooth operation of secure environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a screening officer?

To thrive as a Screening Officer, you need attention to detail, strong observation skills, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with security screening equipment, X-ray machines, metal detectors, and relevant security certifications are often required. Excellent communication, calmness under pressure, and professionalism help Screening Officers interact effectively with the public and handle challenging situations. These skills ensure safety, compliance with regulations, and efficient screening processes in sensitive environments like airports or secure facilities.

What are some of the common challenges faced by screening officers, and how can they be effectively managed?

Screening Officers often deal with high-pressure environments where attention to detail and adherence to strict protocols are crucial. Common challenges include handling large volumes of passengers or items efficiently, managing difficult or non-compliant individuals, and staying alert during repetitive tasks. Effectively managing these challenges involves robust training, strong communication skills, teamwork, and regular breaks to maintain focus. Support from supervisors and clear escalation procedures also help Screening Officers address issues quickly and maintain a secure environment.

What is the difference between Screening Officer vs Security Guard?

AspectScreening OfficerSecurity Guard
CredentialsTypically requires security or screening certifications, background checksOften requires security licenses, training certifications
Work EnvironmentAirport, event venues, government buildings, healthcare facilitiesCommercial buildings, retail stores, industrial sites, public spaces
Employer & IndustryGovernment agencies, airports, event organizersPrivate security firms, retail chains, property management

While both roles focus on safety and security, Screening Officers primarily conduct passenger or visitor screenings using metal detectors and scanners, often in airports or government facilities. Security Guards provide general security services, patrolling premises and monitoring for suspicious activity. The roles overlap in credentials and work environments but differ in specific duties and focus areas.

How to become an airport screening officer?

To become an airport screening officer, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, pass a background check, and complete security training provided by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) or relevant agency. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle stressful situations are important, and some positions may require certification or security clearance.

For over 60 years, Somerville has been a trusted name in the commercial fleet transportation industry. As a dynamic, family-owned business, we provide a full suite of leasing and fleet management solutions. Our reputation is built on integrity, quality, and a relentless commitment to customer service excellence.

We’re growing — and looking for a motivated Account Executive to join our National Leasing team. If you’re a self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit who thrives on building relationships, this is your opportunity to grow with a respected industry leader.

What You’ll Be Doing-

  • Prospect and generate new business through outbound calls, networking, and client meetings.
  • Build and manage a portfolio of accounts while driving retention and growth.
  • Source vehicles, prepare quotes, and deliver tailored leasing solutions.
  • Analyze customer needs and recommend value-driven fleet management options.
  • Develop proposals, presentations, and contracts with professionalism and detail.
  • Use CRM tools to track leads, pipeline, and customer activity.
  • Collaborate across departments to provide seamless, one-stop solutions for clients.

What Makes You a Great Fit-

  • Proven B2B sales experience (automotive/leasing/fleet preferred, but not required).
  • Strong oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset — comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to build relationships across all levels of business (Director to CEO).
  • Willingness to earn and maintain AMVIC license (training provided).

Why Join Somerville National Leasing?

  • Competitive base salary plus incentive-based compensation.
  • Vehicle expense allowance.
  • Comprehensive health and dental benefits program.
  • Flexibility with remote work, on-the-road days, and collaborative office time.
  • Career growth supported by training, mentorship, and annual development planning.
  • Family-owned, people-first culture with a strong reputation in the industry.
