Job description

Pro-Active Engineering is seeking a SMT Lead to join our 2nd shift (M-TH 4:15 pm – 2:45 am) This position heads up the SMT department by producing quality products and trained SMT employees while overseeing department employees, quality, maintenance, budgets, reports, supplies, scheduling and troubleshooting. The position follows standard work methods and practices safe work habits to ensure production is as efficient and safe as possible.
Essential Functions
1. Provide employee coaching and development to all team members.
2. Assign and oversee the following work daily for direct reports:
  1. Loading components onto feeders.
  2. Tearing down loaded components of completed jobs.
  3. Screen printing bare boards.
  4. SPI’ing printed boards.
  5. Hand placing components.
  6. Loading/unloading assemblies out of the oven.
  7. Labeling bare boards.
  8. Assistance in changeover.
  9. Perform First Article Approvals.
  10. Lead team to meet department goals and objectives.
3. Review and disposition nonconforming products and determine appropriate resolution.
4. Drive daily continuous improvement of assigned area.
5. Follow internal assembly process documentation ensuring product meets internal, customer, and regulatory requirements.
6. Work with management to understand the production schedule as it pertains to the SMT area, and the resources required to meet this demand.
7. Work with management and other internal resources to program layouts before scheduled production runs.
8. Troubleshoot machine problems, to include, but not limited to, machine failures, placement issues, programming issues, package problems, screen printing issues, reflow oven profiles, and quality.
9. Ensure completion of SMT equipment maintenance according to established procedures and document appropriately.
10. Remove parts that do not meet production process standards and notify management of product discrepancies and/or equipment malfunctions.
11. Provide production feedback.
12. Hold morning meetings with your team to assign tasks.
13. Work with management to create and maintain an area budget as it pertains to area upkeep.
14. Review boards, components, and post assembly for defects and consistency to ensure accuracy.
15. Work overtime as needed (with management approval) in area to meet scheduled ship dates.
16. Act as a role model and leader to other employees while maintaining and promoting a positive attitude.
17. Train and assist other SMT area employees with job related tasks with assistance from management.
18. Oversee the completion of training requirements for SMT employees.
19. During machine downtime, assist other SMT employees as needed, i.e. training, loading and unloading jobs, screen printing, etc.
20. Measure and oversee changeover.
21. Ensure that team members are logging time in ERP system.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position oversees daily tasks for all employees in the assigned area. Leads act as a coach and mentor for assigned employees.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to working near moving mechanical parts and caustic fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
Physical Demands
  1. Prolonged periods of standing.
  2. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds at times.
Required Education and Experience
  1. High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
  2. 3-5 Years SMT experience.
  3. Ability to perform surface mount component soldering on printed circuit boards to IPC standards.
  4. Knowledge of electronic components and equipment.
  5. Experience and ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Preferred Education and Experience
  1. Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent.
  2. Previous coaching, training or Lead experience.
