Job description

Scrap Management Industries is looking for a Material Handler/Equipment Operator to add to our growing team. This position requires the expert, safe operation of various types of heavy equipment to move, organize, stack, load and unload processed and unprocessed scrap metal. The ideal candidate will have grapple and magnet experience.
Requirements
  • Operates heavy equipment in compliance with the company operating safety policies and procedures
  • Moves and positions raw materials and finished components with use of material moving equipment
  • Conducts routine equipment inspections and preventative maintenance on equipment; maintains accurate records in the form of pre and post shift inspections
  • Monitor and maintain all production equipment, i.e. material handlers, front end wheel loaders, track excavator with shear attachment, semi tractors, rail car mover, skid steer, balers, shears, etc.
  • Properly follow company and OSHA safety procedures
  • Expected to report any defects or needed repairs to supervisor immediately
  • Willing to cross-train in other positions and assists other employees as needed
  • Ensure a clean, safe and orderly workplace; clean and prepare sites by removing debris and possible hazards
  • Follow instructions from Shredder & Maintenance Superintendent
  • Must be able to identify and sort various scrap metal commodities
  • Safely categorize and stack scrap metal material
  • Attend all scheduled training and meetings
  • All other duties as assigned

Education and Experience: The minimum level of education and experience required to perform the job at a satisfactory level.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 years previous experience operating heavy equipment
  • Expert knowledge of heavy-equipment operating principles

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The minimum level of knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job at a satisfactory level.
  • Ability to adhere to scheduled hours with dependability and consistency
  • Ability to adapt to a constantly changing landscape
  • Ability to work well under the pressure of meeting demands and deadlines
  • Excellent professional presence and work ethic
  • Must be able to identify scrap metal commodities
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, non-stop environment
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions
  • Ability to operate equipment under varying working conditions
  • Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations
  • English (preferred); Bilingual a plus
