What is scoping?

A scoping job involves editing and formatting legal transcripts for court reporters. Scopists use specialized software to review rough transcripts, correcting grammar, punctuation, and formatting while ensuring accuracy based on audio recordings and reporter notes. This role requires strong language skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with legal terminology. Scopists work closely with court reporters to produce polished, final transcripts efficiently. Many scopists work as freelancers, offering flexibility in workload and schedule.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the scoping position?

To thrive as a Scopist, you need excellent grammar, punctuation, and editing skills, often supported by specialized training or coursework in legal or court reporting fields. Familiarity with transcription and court reporting software like Case CATalyst or Eclipse, as well as a solid understanding of legal terminology, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, time management, and the ability to work independently are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure that transcripts are accurate, professionally formatted, and delivered in a timely manner to clients, which is essential in the legal industry.

What are the main challenges faced by a scopist in their daily work?

One of the main challenges for a Scopist is maintaining accuracy and consistency when editing lengthy and complex transcripts that often include specialized legal terminology and multiple speakers. Scopists must also manage tight deadlines, especially when working with several court reporters simultaneously, and ensure that all client-specific formatting preferences are correctly applied. Additionally, the role often requires working independently and troubleshooting technical issues with transcription software. However, strong organizational skills and effective communication with court reporters and other team members can help mitigate these challenges and lead to a successful workflow.

Job description

Job Description Technical I&E Account Manager / Project Manager Location: West Houston, Texas Employment Type: Full-Time, Direct Hire Travel: Approximately 25% Position Overview Our client, an established industrial automation and systems integration consulting firm, is seeking a Technical I&E Account Manager / Project Manager to support large customer accounts involving instrumentation, electrical, SCADA, and industrial control system integration projects. This position is ideal for an experienced Instrumentation & Electrical professional who wants to transition away from a primarily field-based role and move into project management, technical account leadership, and scope development. The selected candidate will use their field experience to interpret P&IDs, understand instrumentation and electrical requirements, define project scope, and communicate customer needs to the internal SCADA and automation teams.

The role combines technical I&E knowledge, project coordination, and customer relationship management. Responsibilities Manage key customer accounts with active I&E, SCADA, and automation integration projects. Serve as the primary technical and project-management contact between customers and internal engineering teams.

Review P&IDs, instrument documentation, electrical drawings, control narratives, and related project information. Translate customer requirements and field conditions into clearly defined scopes of work. Work closely with SCADA, controls, and automation teams to communicate I&E requirements.

Help establish project deliverables, responsibilities, schedules, priorities, and technical expectations. Coordinate instrumentation, electrical, controls, and SCADA activities across multiple projects. Lead customer meetings, technical discussions, project reviews, and status updates.

Monitor project progress and address scope, schedule, resource, and communication issues. Identify scope changes and communicate their impact to customers and internal stakeholders. Maintain strong customer relationships and develop a clear understanding of each account's operational needs.

Support project planning from initial discovery and scope development through implementation and commissioning. Visit customer facilities during commissioning, startup, and other critical project phases. Help ensure completed systems meet customer expectations and operational requirements.

Identify additional opportunities to support existing customer accounts. Required Qualifications Professional experience with industrial instrumentation and electrical systems. Hands-on field experience supporting I&E construction, installation, maintenance, commissioning, or startup activities.

Ability to read and interpret P&IDs. Working knowledge of field instrumentation, control devices, electrical systems, and industrial processes. Ability to define technical scope and communicate requirements to SCADA, controls, and engineering personnel.

Experience working directly with customers, contractors, operations teams, and technical stakeholders. Strong project coordination, organization, and follow-through. Ability to manage multiple customer accounts and projects simultaneously.

Strong written and verbal communication skills. Willingness to travel approximately 25%, primarily for customer meetings and commissioning support. Preferred Background Experience working for a systems integrator, automation firm, engineering consultancy, EPC firm, or industrial operator.

Background supporting pipeline, midstream, oil and gas, energy, or other industrial infrastructure. Familiarity with SCADA systems, PLC-based controls, RTUs, industrial communications, and OT environments. Experience developing scopes of work, project plans, estimates, proposals, or change orders.

Previous experience as an I&E Technician, I&E Specialist, I&E Engineer, Commissioning Specialist, Project Engineer, or Technical Project Manager. Experience leading projects or serving as the technical point of contact for major customer accounts. Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate has built a strong career in instrumentation and electrical fieldwork and is ready to apply that experience in a more office-based leadership role.

This person should be technically credible with customers and field personnel while also being able to organize projects, define scope, manage expectations, and communicate effectively with SCADA and automation teams. This is not a traditional sales position or a full-time field role. It is a technical account and project-management opportunity for someone who understands how I&E systems are implemented in the field and can help guide integration projects from initial scope through successful commissioning.
