To thrive as a Scientific Software Developer Intern, you need a solid background in computer science or a related field, strong programming skills (often in Python, C++, or Java), and familiarity with scientific computing concepts. Experience with version control systems (like Git), scientific libraries (such as NumPy or SciPy), and sometimes knowledge of Linux environments or HPC systems is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills that set candidates apart. These competencies ensure you can efficiently contribute to research-driven software projects, collaborate with scientists, and develop robust scientific applications.

How does a Scientific Software Developer Intern typically collaborate with researchers and other developers during a project?

As a Scientific Software Developer Intern, you will often work closely with research scientists to understand their computational needs and translate those requirements into software solutions. Collaboration usually involves participating in team meetings, clarifying project specifications, and regularly updating progress through code reviews or documentation. You may also pair with experienced developers to learn best practices, troubleshoot issues, and integrate your work with larger codebases. Job description

Software Engineering Intern
Location: Lafayette, LA (Preferred)
Type: Internship (Part-Time or Full-Time Available)
About DMR Technologies
DMR Technologies is a Louisiana-based drone manufacturer developing industry-leading solutions for agriculture, public safety, critical infrastructure, and defense. As a fast-growing technology company, we build much more than drones—we create the software, automation, and internal systems that power every part of our business.
We're looking for a Software Engineering Intern who enjoys building things, learning quickly, and leveraging modern AI development tools to solve real-world business problems.
What You'll Do
As a Software Engineering Intern, you'll work directly with company leadership to design and develop internal software that improves efficiency across the organization. Projects move quickly, and your work will be used by real employees and customers.
Projects may include:
  • Building features for DMR's custom internal ERP platform
  • Developing web applications using JavaScript and React
  • Creating internal business tools and workflow automation
  • Assisting with website development and content updates
  • Developing customer-facing and internal web applications
  • Building and configuring AI-powered agents and chatbots using platforms such as Open Claw
  • Integrating APIs and third-party software
  • Assisting with light UI/UX improvements and basic graphic design
  • Troubleshooting, testing, and improving existing software solutions
No two weeks are exactly alike, and interns are encouraged to contribute ideas and own projects from concept through deployment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field
  • Experience with JavaScript
  • Familiarity with React
  • Basic understanding of HTML and CSS
  • Comfortable using Git or other version control systems
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated and eager to learn new technologies
Bonus Experience
Experience with any of the following is a plus:
  • TypeScript
  • Node.js
  • REST APIs
  • SQL databases
  • Python
  • Mobile app development
  • UI/UX design
  • WordPress or website management
  • AI-assisted development tools such as Claude, Codex, Cursor, Windsurf, or similar
  • Prompt engineering and AI workflow automation
What We're Looking For
We care less about checking every technical box and more about finding someone who loves building software.
The ideal candidate:
  • Enjoys figuring things out independently
  • Learns new technologies quickly
  • Isn't afraid to experiment
  • Can turn ideas into working software
  • Uses AI tools effectively while still understanding the code they're writing
  • Communicates well with both technical and non-technical teammates
Why DMR?
As an intern, you won't spend your summer fixing minor bugs or working on isolated assignments. You'll build software that is actively used throughout the company and have direct exposure to executive leadership, product development, manufacturing, sales, and operations.
You'll gain hands-on experience with:
  • Modern JavaScript development
  • React applications
  • AI-assisted software development
  • Business software architecture
  • Rapid product development
  • Startup technology culture
  • Real-world problem solving
If you're excited about building software, experimenting with AI, and seeing your work make an immediate impact, we'd love to meet you.
