Title: Specialist, Instructional (FSC)
Develops, implements, and evaluates formal and informal science instructional programs for K12 students, educators, and the community in a variety of science disciplines and learning environments. Provides direct science
instruction; develops curriculum, instructional resources, assessments, and professional learning; and collaborates with district personnel, schools, community organizations, and external partners to expand high-quality science
learning opportunities. Instruction may occur at Fernbank Science Center, schools, field locations, community sites, and through virtual or digital environments.
Essential Job Duties
Develops and facilitates formal and/or informal learning experiences through classroom instruction, outreach programs, Science Center visits, exhibits, field experiences, demonstrations, community events and other experiential learning opportunities.
Provides direct science instruction to K12 students through standards-based courses, laboratories, investigations, field experiences, Science Center programs, outreach programs, and other specialized instructional experiences using research-based instructional practices.
Facilitates summer programs for teachers and students, including professional development and academic camps, based on program needs and assigned work calendar.
Develops, implements, evaluates, and revises science curricula, instructional programs, activities, educational resources, assessments, and program evaluation tools to support formal and informal learning, measure student progress, inform instruction, and identify instructional and program needs.
Collaborates with district and external stakeholders, including formal and informal science educators, universities, museums, science organizations, government agencies, and community organizations, to identify professional learning needs, facilitate science professional learning, enhance science programming, and expand educational opportunities for students and educators.
Maintains current knowledge of applicable federal, state, and district educational requirements; science standards; research-based instructional practices; and developments within assigned scientific disciplines, and applies that knowledge to instructional programming.
Provides appropriate supervision of students and participants and implements district and instructional safety procedures related to student behavior, accessibility, laboratories, field experiences, scientific equipment, demonstrations, and other learning environments.
Facilitates and participates in public and community science programming, including evening and weekend events, planetarium and observatory programs, and other special events as assigned.
Plans, coordinates, implements, and evaluates special projects and initiatives as assigned.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Master's degree or higher in science education is preferred. In lieu of an advanced degree, a minimum of five (5) years of relevant science-based experience is required. Acceptable experience may include work in government agencies (e.g., NOAA, NASA, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service), school districts, university research, science communication, or informal science education settings such as museums and science centers.
Minimum of (5) years of Formal K-12 classroom science teaching experience is preferred, though significant experience in informal teaching environments will also be considered.
Must possess, or be eligible to obtain, a valid Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC)-approved certificate in any science content area at the elementary, middle, or high school level. Certification at the T-5 level or higher is preferred. Candidates may meet this requirement through a traditional certification route or an alternative certification program approved by the GaPSC.
