Position Summary
School nursing, a specialized practice of nursing, protects and promotes student health, facilitates optimal development, and advances academic success. School nurses, grounded in ethical and evidence-based practice, are the leaders who bridge health care and education, provide care coordination, advocate for quality student-centered care, and collaborate to design systems that allow individuals and communities to develop their full potential. Adopted by the NASN Board of Directors February 2017.
Essential Duties
  • Facilitate the implementation of a comprehensive school health program according to the medical direction and specific duties outlined in the Memorandum of Agreement between Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools (CHCCS)and the Orange County Health Department (OCHD)
  • Promote health and wellness in students and staff
  • Promote academic achievement and classroom attendance by identifying, correcting or preventing health problems and injuries which interfere with school performance
  • Prepare students to achieve their full potential by helping them to become responsible for their health decisions and practice
  • Oversee the emotional, mental, physical and social health of students
  • Manage chronic health conditions and disabilities, including support for exceptional children and as needed 1:1 nursing needs
  • Provide Medical Treatments as outlined by the Nurse Practice Act of North Carolina, and as ordered by a medical provider
  • Promote positive health and safety behaviors through programs on health education and prevention
  • Promote a safe school environment
  • Provide first aid care, emergency response and health assessment
  • Writes Emergency Medical Plans and Individualized Health Plans and coordinates the care of students with chronic or acute health conditions;
  • Communicate with teachers and staff to ensure the safety and well-being of students;
  • Administer medications and monitor delegated medication administration;
  • Assist in the evaluation of students for Special Services (Special Education);
  • Coordinate and provide vision and hearing screenings, referrals for services and follow-up;
  • Assist families in accessing health insurance and health care services
  • Monitor and Reports to administration staff compliance with required beginning of the year training which include but are not limited to: asthma, life threatening allergies, diabetes, concussion and blood borne pathogens
  • Educate and train First Responders according to Board Policy 4252/6152 First Aid Policy
  • Completes continuing education according to the North Carolina Board of Nursing and National School Nurse Certification (once obtained)
  • Document appropriate written and verbal communication of all nursing activities
  • Assist in the identification, reporting and implementation of communicable disease prevention and response
  • Provide coordination support and staffing of vaccination events through the Orange County Health Department (OCHD)
  • Relieve OCHD nursing staff in shelters during disasters (to the maximum extent possible based on availability)
  • Assist OCHD in a crisis or disaster response (to the maximum extent possible based on availability)
  • Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures

Education/Experience Requirements
  • B.S. Degree in Nursing required
  • Master's Degree in a related field preferred
  • Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina
  • 5 years nursing experience preferred
  • Prior experience in a school setting is preferred
  • Certified in CPR/First Aid/AED
  • Must obtain National Certification within 3 years of the initial hire date and maintain renewals every 5 years
