Job description

SCHOOL DOOR MONITOR


Department: Operations/Safety & Security
Reports To: Building Principal or Designee
Employment Status: Classified
Work Schedule: As assigned by the district
Location: School Campus





POSITION SUMMARY


The School Door Monitor is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, welcoming, and
orderly school entrance and supporting the overall safety of students, staff, and visitors.
The position serves as a visible presence at designated school entrances and is
responsible for monitoring the weapons detection system, controlling access to the
building, checking students in and out to authorized parents/guardians, directing visitors,
supervising designated areas, and enforcing established school safety procedures.






The School Door Monitor is expected to provide excellent customer service while
consistently following district policies, school procedures, emergency protocols, and
confidentiality requirements.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


1. Access Control


Monitor and control access to designated school entrances and exits.
Operate and monitor the school's weapons detection system in accordance with
district procedures.
Observe individuals entering and exiting the building and respond appropriately to
security alerts.
Verify the identity and authorization of parents, guardians, visitors, and other
individuals before permitting access.
Follow established procedures for restricted or unauthorized individuals.
Monitor doors to ensure they remain secured when required.
Maintain accurate visitor, student check-in, and check-out documentation.
Check students in and out to parents/guardians in accordance with school
procedures and authorized pickup lists.











Contact the appropriate administrator when questions arise regarding a student's
release or an individual's access to the building.
Never release a student to an unauthorized individual.
Report suspicious behavior, security concerns, damaged locks, propped doors, or
other access-control concerns immediately.




2. Welcoming & Directing


Serve as a friendly, professional, and visible representative of the school district.
Greet students, parents, staff, and visitors courteously.
Provide clear directions regarding offices, classrooms, events, student pickup
locations, and other areas of the campus.
Assist visitors with understanding school entry and check-in procedures.
Maintain a calm and professional demeanor, particularly during high-volume arrival
and dismissal periods.
Help create a welcoming environment while maintaining appropriate security
boundaries.
Refer questions or concerns requiring administrative attention to the appropriate
school administrator.











3. Supervision


Maintain an active and visible presence in assigned areas.
Monitor hallways, entrances, exits, common areas, and other designated locations
as assigned.
Monitor student movement during arrival, dismissal, class changes, and other
designated times.
Report student safety concerns, unauthorized activity, conflicts, or behavioral
issues to appropriate school personnel.
Assist administrators and staff with maintaining an orderly school environment.
Observe and report hazards such as spills, damaged equipment, unsecured doors,
blocked exits, or other unsafe conditions.









Assist with supervision during special events, assemblies, athletic events, field
trips, or other activities when assigned.


4. Safety Enforcement


Consistently enforce established building access, visitor, weapons detection, and
safety procedures.

Respond appropriately to weapons detection system alerts by following district-
approved protocols and immediately notifying designated personnel.

Never place oneself or others in unnecessary danger when responding to a security
concern.

Assist with emergency procedures, including lockdowns, evacuations, shelter-in-
place procedures, severe weather events, and other emergency situations.

Immediately report emergencies, threats, suspicious activity, or safety concerns to
administration and/or emergency personnel as appropriate.
Support the school's emergency response plan and participate in required safety
drills and training.
Maintain awareness of surroundings and identify potential threats before they
escalate.
Protect confidential student and family information encountered while performing
assigned duties.
Follow all district policies, Arkansas laws, school safety requirements, and
administrative directives.









STUDENT CHECK-IN/CHECK-OUT RESPONSIBILITIES


The School Door Monitor will:


Verify parent/guardian identification according to district procedures.
Confirm that the individual is authorized to pick up the student.
Follow all established student release procedures.
Document student check-in and check-out accurately and promptly.
Communicate with the appropriate office personnel when authorization is unclear.
Ensure students remain in the designated waiting area until properly released.





Never make exceptions to established student release procedures without
administrative authorization.


WEAPONS DETECTION SYSTEM RESPONSIBILITIES


The School Door Monitor will:


Operate and monitor the weapons detection system according to district-approved
training and procedures.
Maintain constant attention to system activity during assigned monitoring periods.
Respond to alerts calmly and immediately according to established protocols.
Notify designated administrators or safety personnel when an alert occurs.
Assist with maintaining orderly movement through the detection system.
Never attempt to independently investigate, search, confront, or physically restrain
an individual unless specifically authorized and trained to do so.
Document or report system concerns, malfunctions, or repeated alerts as directed.
Participate in required weapons detection and school safety training.

Maintain appropriate boundaries with students and families.
Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or district administration.











QUALIFICATIONS


Required
High school diploma or equivalent.
Ability to pass required background checks and employment screenings.
Ability to complete district-required school safety, weapons detection, emergency
response, and other required training.
Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, staff, and
visitors.
Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment in stressful situations.
Ability to stand, walk, patrol, and remain attentive for extended periods.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to follow written and verbal directions and established safety procedures.











Preferred
Previous experience in school safety, security, supervision, customer service, law
enforcement, military service, or a related field.
CPR/First Aid certification.
Experience working with children or adolescents.
Experience operating security or access-control systems.






PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS


The employee may be required to:
Stand and walk for extended periods.
Patrol indoor areas of the school campus.
Bend, stoop, reach, and move as necessary to perform assigned duties.
Respond quickly to safety or emergency situations.
Occasionally lift or move items necessary to perform assigned duties.
Maintain sufficient visual and auditory awareness to monitor assigned areas and
respond to alarms and safety concerns.







EVALUATION


Performance will be evaluated by the building principal or designee in accordance with
district policies and procedures. Evaluation will consider the employee's effectiveness in
maintaining safe access, monitoring the weapons detection system, supervising assigned
areas, following safety procedures, communicating with students and families, and
fulfilling all assigned responsibilities.
