Description:

POSITION SUMMARY:

The employee in this position provides daily school bus transportation of students to and from school and home in accordance with school district contract requirements.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Comply with all applicable federal and state regulations regarding operation of commercial vehicles and school buses.
  • Safely operate a school bus on an assigned route as directed. Demonstrate courtesy and professionalism while on the road.
  • Conduct vehicle inspections as required by DOT and school bus regulations. Report mechanical defects to the appropriate shop staff.
  • Maintain, read and understand route sheets including time changes.
  • Maintain scheduled route to established time and mileage. Immediately notify supervisor of changes/delays.
  • Maintain control of student passengers at all times to insure safe operation of vehicle. Record and report discipline problems through appropriate procedures established by the district.
  • When transporting special needs/exceptional children, manage student care and behavior within guidelines established by state School Bus Driver Manual and individual school district.
  • Report all vehicle and passenger accidents/incidents to your supervisor promptly and comply with company accident response procedures.
  • Report work-related injuries to supervisor and comply with company workers’ compensation procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student medical and personal information.
  • Maintain valid driver’s license, physical exam certification and school bus endorsement and share with supervisor.
  • Complete required paperwork accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Comply with company procedures regarding vehicle keys, lock boxes, and video cameras.
  • Attend in-service training and safety meetings as required by federal and state regulations and by the Company.
  • Complete school bus recertification requirements in a timely manner.
  • Keep vehicle clean and orderly on a daily basis.
  • Fuel bus in accordance with terminal standards.
  • Operate vehicle communication systems within guidelines of company policies.
  • Report all personal motor vehicle violations to supervisor as required by DOT regulations.
  • Other work-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required:

  1. Must be the required state age and possess a valid commercial driver’s license with a valid school bus endorsement.
  2. Must meet physical qualifications for school bus physical with or without state approved waivers.
  3. Must have a satisfactory motor vehicle record, criminal history record and child abuse history record.
  4. Ability to safely operate large commercial vehicles.
  5. Ability to read English and understand traffic signs and signals, road maps, and route schedules.
  6. Must successfully complete skills and classroom recertification training as required.
  7. Ability to effectively manage student behavior in a non-confrontational manner.
  8. Ability to manage vehicle and student emergencies in calm, appropriate manner.


EDUCATION:

  • A high-school degree or equivalent.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Sitting for 4-6 hours per day.
  • Vision adequate for reading traffic signals and signs, maps and schedules.
  • Hearing adequate for general traffic conditions, traffic signals, emergency vehicles and monitoring and using vehicle communication equipment.
  • Repetitive use of hands, arms and legs for operating vehicle controls.
  • Range of motion adequate for safe operation of commercial vehicles.
  • Ability to climb steps of bus and sufficient mobility to access vehicle emergency exits.
  • Ability to reach overhead and to shoulder height and to push/pull to clear vehicle of ice and snow.
  • Ability to bend and stoop to conduct vehicle inspections and to properly secure wheelchairs.
  • Ability to push and pull with up to 40 lbs. of force, or meet state requirements.
  • Range of motion and sufficient mobility to safely evacuate passengers, including but not limited to accessing emergency exits via the isle of the vehicle.
