Position Overview:
  • Liberty Local Schools is seeking a dedicated and skilled Bus Mechanic who will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our school transportation system. The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of mechanical systems, with the ability to perform repairs and maintenance on buses, trucks, and related equipment. This position requires a commitment to safety standards and the ability to respond promptly to emergencies.
  • As a Bus Mechanic, you will be responsible for conducting regular inspections, maintaining accurate repair records, and ensuring compliance with all state and federal regulations governing school bus operations. Your technical skills will also be complemented by your willingness to support the district by serving as a bus driver when necessary.

Qualifications:
  • Thorough knowledge of and experience as a mechanic.
  • Proficiency in repair and maintenance of buses, trucks & maintenance equipment.
  • Able to maintain records of all maintenance and work repairs.
  • Able to maintain high standards of safety and good housekeeping.
  • Able to serve as a bus driver when needed.
  • Able to respond to transportation-related emergencies.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in relevant areas (e.g., brakes, diesel engines, electrical/electronic systems, compressed natural gas, school bus conversion equipment) preferred.
  • Familiarity with state and federal regulations related to school bus operation, vehicle emissions, inspections, and driver qualifications under all OAC 3301.83 codes.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal transportation regulations, including OSHA, DOT, and EPA standards.
  • Must hold or be able to obtain Ohio School Bus Operator Certification via pre-service training and in-service requirements under OAC 3301-83.10.
  • Must hold a current and complete physical or have the ability to obtain.
  • Must hold current successful BCI & FBI background checks or ability to obtain.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Transportation Director or Superintendent.

Preferred Skills:
  • Hold a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B or higher, with School Bus (S), Passenger (P), and Air Brake endorsements.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand, walk, and engage with students and staff for extended periods.

Additional Information:
  • The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the district.
