Job description

The School Bus Driver is responsible for providing safe, reliable, and timely transportation for students to and from Gobind Sarvar School Edmonton, as well as for school-approved activities, field trips, and events. Reporting to the Transportation Manager, the incumbent operates the school bus in accordance with Alberta traffic legislation, school transportation regulations, and the School's policies and procedures while maintaining the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and customer service. The School Bus Driver plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of students by providing a secure, respectful, and positive transportation environment. This position requires excellent driving skills, sound judgment, strong communication abilities, and a commitment to student safety and the values of Gobind Sarvar School.

Key Responsibilities

Transportation Services

  • Safely transport students to and from designated pick-up and drop-off locations, school-approved activities, field trips, and special events.
  • Operate the school bus in accordance with Alberta traffic legislation, school transportation regulations, and Gobind Sarvar School policies and procedures.
  • Follow assigned routes and schedules while ensuring reliable and punctual transportation services.
  • Assist students with boarding and exiting the bus safely, when required.
  • Ensure students are safely seated before operating the vehicle and verify that no student remains on the bus at the completion of each route.

Vehicle Operations

  • Conduct and document daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure the vehicle is safe, roadworthy, and in good working condition.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and general condition of the assigned school bus.
  • Report mechanical defects, maintenance requirements, accidents, damage, or safety concerns promptly to the Transportation Manager.
  • Ensure the assigned vehicle complies with all operational and safety requirements before each trip.

Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to all applicable Alberta traffic laws, School Bus Safety Regulations, and School policies.
  • Exercise sound judgment and prioritize student safety at all times.
  • Follow established emergency procedures in the event of accidents, breakdowns, or medical emergencies.
  • Complete required inspection reports, mileage logs, incident reports, and transportation documentation accurately and on time.

Communication & Customer Service

  • Maintain professional and respectful communication with students, parents/guardians, staff, and school administration.
  • Communicate promptly with the Transportation Manager regarding delays, route changes, incidents, emergencies, or operational concerns.
  • Promote a positive, respectful, and safe environment for all passengers while representing Gobind Sarvar School professionally.

Other Duties

  • Participate in mandatory safety meetings, training sessions, and professional development as required.
  • Perform other transportation-related duties assigned by the Transportation Manager or School Administration consistent with the position.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred.

Licences & Certifications

  • Valid Alberta Class 2 Driver's Licence with S (School Bus) Endorsement (required).
  • Clean Driver's Abstract.
  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Standard First Aid & CPR Certification is considered an asset.
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada.

Experience

  • Previous experience operating a school bus or commercial passenger vehicle is preferred.
  • Experience working with children or within an educational environment is considered an asset.

  • Knowledge of Alberta traffic laws and school transportation regulations.
  • Strong commitment to student safety and safe vehicle operation.
