Do school bus drivers get 40 hours a week?

School bus drivers typically work around 20 to 30 hours per week, primarily during morning and afternoon routes. Full-time positions may reach 40 hours or more, especially if drivers handle additional routes or activities, but many roles are part-time with variable hours. Scheduling depends on the school district and route demands.

What is the difference between School Bus Driver Bus Driver vs Bus Driver?

AspectSchool Bus Driver Bus Driver
Required CredentialsCommercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger and school bus endorsements
Work EnvironmentSchool campuses, residential neighborhoods, and school bus routes
Employer & Industry UsageSchool districts, private schools, and transportation companies
Common Search & ComparisonPeople often compare school bus drivers to general bus drivers due to similar driving roles

While both roles involve operating buses, a School Bus Driver is specifically trained and licensed to transport students on school routes, often working for school districts. A Bus Driver may operate various types of buses, including city transit or charter buses, and may not require the same specialized endorsements. The key differences lie in the work environment, required credentials, and employer type.

What disqualifies you from being a school bus driver?

School bus driver candidates are typically disqualified if they have a history of serious traffic violations, a criminal record involving violence or drug offenses, or a poor driving record. Additionally, they must pass background checks, drug tests, and a medical exam, and must hold a valid commercial driver's license with passenger and school bus endorsements. Failure to meet these requirements or having certain health issues can disqualify applicants from becoming school bus drivers.

Can you make a living off of being a school bus driver?

School bus drivers can make a living depending on factors such as location, experience, and hours worked. Full-time drivers often earn a salary or hourly wage that can support a household, especially with benefits like health insurance. However, many bus drivers work part-time or seasonal schedules, which may limit income potential.
