School-Based OTs often work with students who have a wide range of needs, making it challenging to provide individualized interventions while balancing a large caseload. They must collaborate closely with teachers, special education staff, and families to integrate therapy strategies into classroom routines, which requires strong communication and adaptability. Additionally, managing documentation and meeting compliance requirements can be time-consuming, so effective organization and time management skills are essential for success in this role.

What are school-based OTs?

School-based occupational therapists (OTs) are professionals who work within educational settings to help students succeed in their daily school activities. They assess and support students who have difficulties with fine motor skills, sensory processing, self-care, or other challenges that affect their ability to participate in school. School-based OTs collaborate with teachers, parents, and other staff to develop strategies and interventions tailored to each student's needs. Their goal is to help students become as independent and successful as possible in the classroom and throughout the school day.

Familiarity with assessment tools, individualized education program (IEP) systems, and adaptive equipment is typically required. Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills are essential for working effectively with students, teachers, and families. These competencies ensure that students receive tailored interventions that support their academic and functional success within the school environment.
