Job description

Part-Time Lifeguard/Instructor

All positions are part-time and located in the Cobb County PARKS Department and may be filled as a Lifeguard or Lifeguard/Instructor, depending upon qualifications. The water skills will be the pre-requisite for the lifeguarding class if the applicant isn't certified. Applicants may be asked to complete the water skills as part of the interview process. Applicants must pass a pre-course swimming skills test prior to taking lifeguarding courses. The water skills test consist of the following:

  • 300-yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke
  • Two-minute tread using legs only
  • The ability to retrieve a 10-lb dive weight from 7 ft. deep, surface and swim 20 yds. with the weight using legs only and exit the pool without using a ladder within 100 seconds

Multiple positions are available at the following locations:

  • Central Aquatics
  • West Cobb Aquatics
  • Mountain View Aquatics
  • South Cobb Aquatics

Lifeguard: $17.34/hr. (Grade: 100P) Lifeguard/Instructor: $17.86/hr. (Grade 101P)

Essential Functions

Part-Time Lifeguard: Ensures compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures: ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals. Observes and oversees the activities of swimmers: scans the water; enforces pool rules; maintains discipline at facility; takes preventive safety actions; rescues distressed swimmers; provides emergency first aid and CPR; and performs other emergency life saving services as needed. Maintains swimming pool and facility: assists with opening pool facility: cleans restrooms, locker rooms, walkways, pool deck, and pool furniture; stocks paper goods; and maintains related documentation. Performs customer service functions: provides information and answers questions regarding pool policies, procedures, programs, fees and other issues; responds to questions and complaints; and initiates problem resolution. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Instructs swimming lessons: prepares lesson plans; registers program participants; takes attendance; teaches and demonstrates a variety of skills, such as floating, kicking, stroke techniques and water safety; tests participants; makes recommendations for future classes and skill development; and monitors the safety of participants during classes. Maintains swimming pool and facility: assists with opening pool facility: cleans restrooms, locker rooms, walkways, pool deck, and pool furniture; stocks paper goods; and maintains related documentation. Performs customer service functions: provides information and answers questions regarding pool policies, procedures, programs, fees and other issues; responds to questions and complaints; and initiates problem resolution. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Part-Time Lifeguard: Must be age 15 or older. Must be able to pass a water/skills test. High School Diploma or GED preferred.

Part-Time Lifeguard/Instructor: Must be age 16 or older. Must be able to pass a water/skills test. High School Diploma or GED supplemented by one year of experience in lifeguarding is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

Part-Time Lifeguard: The following nationally-recognized certifications are preferred: Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid.

Part-Time Lifeguard/Instructor: The following nationally-recognized certifications are preferred: Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor, CPR, and First Aid.

Physical Abilities

Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and prolonged standing, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds). Sensory Requirements Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Environmental Factors Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, electric currents, toxic agents, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, water hazards, violence, disease, or difficult customers.
