Scale Microgrids information

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in scale microgrids, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in scale microgrids often encounter challenges such as integrating various renewable energy sources, managing grid stability, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders like utilities, regulators, and local communities. Effective communication skills, adaptability, and a solid understanding of both technical and regulatory aspects are essential to overcome these hurdles. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, continuous learning about emerging technologies, and proactive problem-solving are key strategies to address these challenges and ensure smooth project implementation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Scale Microgrids Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Scale Microgrids Engineer, you need expertise in electrical engineering, energy systems, and renewable technologies, typically backed by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation software (such as HOMER or ETAP), power system modeling, and relevant certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) or NABCEP are often required. Strong project management, problem-solving, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively and manage complex projects. These abilities are vital to designing, optimizing, and implementing reliable microgrid solutions that meet sustainability and efficiency goals.

What are scale microgrids?

Scale microgrids are localized energy systems that can operate independently or in conjunction with the main power grid, but at a larger or more complex scale than typical small microgrids. They are designed to serve a broader range of energy needs, often incorporating multiple distributed energy resources like solar, wind, batteries, and backup generators. Scale microgrids are commonly used in commercial, industrial, or community settings to improve energy reliability, reduce costs, and support sustainability goals. These systems can provide backup power during outages, manage energy loads, and help integrate renewable energy sources. As energy systems modernize, scale microgrids play a key role in enhancing grid resilience and flexibility.

What is the difference between Scale Microgrids vs Microgrid Project Engineer?

AspectScale MicrogridsMicrogrid Project Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in renewable energy or microgridsEngineering degree, project management certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign, planning, and overseeing large-scale microgrid projectsImplementing, coordinating, and managing specific microgrid projects
Industry UsageUsed by energy companies, utilities, and large-scale developersEmployed by engineering firms, contractors, and project teams

Scale Microgrids focus on designing and deploying large-scale microgrid systems, often involving multiple sites and complex infrastructure. Microgrid Project Engineers work on specific projects, managing technical aspects and ensuring successful implementation. Both roles require technical expertise, but Scale Microgrids typically involve broader strategic planning, while Microgrid Project Engineers focus on project execution.

Job description

Bring your energy to Aggreko as PMO Manager based in Houston, TX. You'll lead the establishment and operational execution of the Project Management Office, ensuring consistent project delivery, process adherence, and resource optimization across major long-term power projects, including data center solutions.
Power without pause. Heating, cooling and oil-free air without end. We keep our customers' worlds on. From world-class events that last a few weeks to mining operations and remote communities who rely on us for decades.
What you'll do as PMO Manager:
  • Manage a team of Project Managers and technicians, providing leadership, guidance, and support to ensure the successful delivery of complex, large-scale projects, working closely with Engineering and Operations leads under the Head of Projects.
  • PMO governance: define, implement, and maintain the Project Management Office, standards, processes, and governance framework for all projects in scope, drawing upon global best practices (e.g., from LAM/AUSPAC PMOs for large, long-term projects).
  • Project oversight & delivery: directly oversee a portfolio of long-term microgrid projects, ensuring adherence to project plans, budgets, schedules, and quality standards. Provide hands-on support and guidance to Project Managers in the execution of their projects, particularly for complex datacenter and gas generation initiatives.
  • Resource management: manage and allocate Project Management resources (including Project Managers and PM technicians) effectively across various projects, ensuring appropriate staffing levels and skill sets are in place to meet project demands. Work with the Head of Projects to identify and address resource gaps.
  • Process improvement & standardization: drive continuous improvement of project management processes, tools, and templates. Ensure consistent application of BOM, Labor, and Procurement planning methodologies, and collaborate with Engineering and Operations to optimize project delivery workflows.

You are:
  • 8-10 years of progressive experience in project management, with at least 3-5 years in a PMO leadership or senior project management role within the power generation, microgrid, or long-term energy projects sector.
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing and managing a Project Management Office (PMO) for complex, large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Proven ability to manage and mentor a team of Project Managers and project delivery staff.
  • Strong understanding of project lifecycle management, including planning, execution, monitoring, control, and closure, ideally with exposure to datacenter projects.
  • Proficiency in project management software, tools, and methodologies (e.g., PMP or similar certification is a plus).
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills

Here's what you'll get:
  • Competitive salary
  • Annual bonus program tied to company and individual performance
  • No premium cost medical plan option available
  • Company provided Life Insurance, Short-Term and Long-Term Disability
  • Career growth opportunities and tuition reimbursement
