What is a SCADA tech?

SCADA techs, or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition technicians, are professionals who install, maintain, and troubleshoot SCADA systems used to monitor and control industrial processes. They work with hardware and software to ensure that machinery and equipment in fields like utilities, manufacturing, and energy operate efficiently and safely. SCADA techs may also be responsible for upgrading systems, training operators, and responding to system alarms or failures. Their role is crucial for minimizing downtime and ensuring smooth, automated operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SCADA tech?

To thrive as a SCADA Tech, you need a solid understanding of industrial automation, control systems, and electrical fundamentals, often supported by an associate degree or relevant certifications. Familiarity with SCADA software (such as Wonderware or GE iFIX), PLC programming, and network protocols like Modbus or Ethernet/IP is crucial. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you troubleshoot issues and collaborate with operations teams. These competencies ensure reliable system performance, minimize downtime, and support safe, efficient industrial operations.

What are some typical challenges a SCADA tech might face when troubleshooting system issues in the field?

SCADA Techs often encounter challenges such as diagnosing communication failures between remote devices and the central control system, dealing with equipment malfunctions under time constraints, and quickly identifying the root cause of system alarms. Field environments can be unpredictable, requiring adaptability and strong problem-solving skills. Collaborating with engineers, electricians, and IT personnel is common to resolve complex issues and ensure minimal downtime for critical infrastructure.

Job description

This is not a typical project management role! We are looking for a technically grounded engineer who can own the full lifecycle of automation projects – from identifying opportunities with clients, through design and development, to on-site commissioning and handover. You will serve as Grantek’s local representative in the Portland area, building and maintaining client relationships, uncovering new project opportunities, and translating client needs into actionable proposals and technical solutions. A strong technical background in Rockwell Automation’s PlantPAx Distributed Control System (DCS) platform is essential to this role. You will be expected to contribute hands‑on to PlantPAx development work alongside our engineering team, while also coordinating project activities, managing schedules and budgets, and keeping clients informed. The ideal candidate is someone who is equally comfortable configuring process objects in Studio 5000 as they are presenting a project proposal to a client’s engineering leadership. You will collaborate closely with Grantek’s engineering team to deliver projects across a range of industrial automation technologies. With mentoring and development from senior leadership, you will grow into a role where you can confidently take a project from conception through to delivery.

Key-skills and interests:
  • PlantPAx DCS

  • Contributing hands‑on to PlantPAx DCS development, including configuration of process objects, faceplates, alarm management, and batch control sequences
  • Developing and maintaining PLC/PAC programs in Studio 5000 Logix Designer for process control applications
  • Configuring HMI and SCADA visualization using FactoryTalk View SE and/or other platforms
  • Communicating project status, milestones, and deliverables to clients and internal stakeholders
  • Identifying project risks and developing mitigation plans
  • Commissioning new solutions at client sites; finding opportunities for improvements and follow‑on work
  • Creating documentation, including project proposals, engineering notes, design traceability documentation, and case studies
  • Collaborating with Grantek’s engineering team to ensure successful project delivery across all phases
  • Following up on pending quotes and maintaining consistency in quoting by following corporate guidelines
