Its portfolio consists of a strategic mix of solar, solar plus battery, wind, and pumped storage hydro facilities. rPlus is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah and is backed by Gardner Group and Sandbrook Capital.
Role Summary
The SCADA & Operational Technology (OT) Engineer supports the design, implementation, cybersecurity, and ongoing operation of the control systems and communications networks that monitor and manage rPlus' utility-scale renewable energy assets. This role works across solar, wind, battery energy storage, and substation systems to ensure reliable plant operations, accurate performance data, and secure connectivity with utilities and grid operators. The position partners with developers, EPCs, OEMs, service providers, and internal stakeholders throughout project development, commissioning, and commercial operations. Perform other duties as assigned to support the Company's operational and technology needs.
General Responsibilities
SCADA Design and System Integration
• Support the design and implementation of SCADA architectures, control networks, point databases, I/O lists, and communications systems for solar, wind, battery energy storage, and substation facilities.
• Assist with configuration and maintenance of SCADA platforms, historians, dashboards, alarms, reporting tools, and operational performance metrics.
• Integrate PLCs, RTUs, plant controllers, and field devices including inverters, relays, meters, meteorological stations, battery management systems (BMS), and energy management systems (EMS).
• Support implementation and tuning of plant control functions including active and reactive power control, power factor control, Volt/VAR control, ramp-rate control, frequency response, and curtailment strategies.
• Configure and maintain time synchronization systems using technologies such as GPS, PTP, NTP, and IRIG-B.
• Develop data visualizations, dashboards, and performance monitoring tools using Ignition and other approved software platforms.
Commissioning and Operations Support
• Participate in factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), communications verification, point-to-point checkout, and system performance validation.
• Support utility and ISO telemetry and control integrations, including testing, commissioning, model validation, and operational turnover.
• Provide advanced troubleshooting and operational support for SCADA systems, communications networks, and control systems.
• Investigate incidents, perform root-cause analyses, and identify opportunities to improve system reliability and reduce downtime.
• Maintain configuration baselines, system documentation, operating procedures, and as-built drawings.
• Provide training and technical guidance to operations personnel, contractors, and site technicians.
Operational Technology Infrastructure and Data Management
• Design, configure, and support OT networks, including switching, routing, fiber, serial communications, cellular, and microwave technologies.
• Maintain network reliability, redundancy, and quality-of-service requirements for critical control-system traffic.
• Administer data historians and data collection systems while supporting integrations with maintenance, performance monitoring, and business intelligence platforms.
• Develop scripts, reports, and automation tools that improve testing, validation, data quality, and operational reporting.
Cybersecurity and Compliance
• Support implementation of OT cybersecurity best practices, including least-privilege access, system hardening, patch management, backup strategies, and network segmentation.
• Coordinate with managed security service providers and technology partners to monitor systems, investigate security events, and maintain secure remote access.
• Assist with compliance initiatives, audits, and documentation related to ISA/IEC 62443, NERC CIP, and other applicable standards.
Vendor and Stakeholder Coordination
• Collaborate with EPCs, OEMs, utilities, ISOs, system integrators, consultants, and internal teams throughout project execution and operations.
• Review technical submittals and ensure conformance with project specifications, utility requirements, cybersecurity standards, and operational objectives.
• Support project handover activities and coordinate issue resolution among stakeholders.
Skill Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Three or more years of hands-on experience supporting SCADA systems, industrial control systems, renewable energy facilities, substations, power generation, or operational technology environments.
• Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus TCP/RTU, DNP3, OPC UA, and related technologies.
• Experience supporting SCADA, HMI, historian, or industrial data systems.
• Familiarity with PLCs, RTUs, plant controllers, and industrial networking technologies.
• Understanding of Ethernet networking concepts, VPNs, firewalls, VLANs, switching, routing, and secure remote access.
• Strong troubleshooting, documentation, communication, and stakeholder coordination skills.
• Ability to explain technical concepts clearly and work effectively with both technical and non-technical teams.
Skill Requirements (Nice to Have)
• Experience supporting utility-scale solar, wind, battery energy storage, or substation automation projects.
• Experience with Ignition, AVEVA/Wonderware, OSI Monarch, AVEVA PI (OSIsoft PI), Canary, or similar industrial software platforms.
• Experience with SEL RTACs, PLC programming, IEC 61850, ICCP/TASE.2, protection systems, or substation communications.
• Knowledge of power systems, grid interconnection requirements, inverter-based resources, and plant controller functions.
• Experience commissioning renewable energy facilities and supporting utility or ISO telemetry integration.
• Experience with Python, PowerShell, SQL, reporting tools, dashboards, automation, or data analytics.
• Familiarity with ISA/IEC 62443, NERC CIP, OT cybersecurity practices, SIEM platforms, and system hardening.
• Relevant industry certifications such as ISA CAP, GICSP, CCNA, Network+, or vendor-specific SCADA and controls certifications.
