POSITION TITLE: Retail Banking Apprentice

REPORTS TO: Branch Manager

JOB DESCRIPTION

SUMMARY

The Retail Banking Apprenticeship Program offers insight and hands-on experience across all areas and levels of the bank. This unique opportunity allows students to explore the full range of careers in banking, far beyond the traditional teller role. Apprentices follow a structured pathway toward a rewarding future in financial services, learning about customer service, lending, operations, compliance, and more. They will discover all the possibilities the banking world has to offer while building professional skills for long-term success. The Retail Banking Apprenticeship is in partnership with the Financial Services Academy (fsaindiana.org), which is part of the Indiana Career Apprenticeship Pathway (indianacap.org).

Retail bankers assist clients with day-to-day banking needs by helping them to manage their money through bank products. They serve as the frontline representatives of a bank, building relationships and supporting clients' financial well-being. As apprentices progress toward becoming fully trained Tellers, they will gain a solid understanding of key banking concepts and practices throughout the two-year program, leading to a broad understanding of banking, including:

  • Banking Structure, Strategy, and Leadership
  • Customer-Facing Services
  • Lending and Products
  • Compliance and Security
  • Core, Transferable Professional Skills

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Transaction Processing:

  • Records customer transactions and issues receipts
  • Balances daily transactions and reports discrepancies to the Head Teller
  • Processes checks and cash, following the specified procedures
  • Orders money supply for the bank, and counts incoming cash
  • Places holds on accounts, processes change orders and accepts loan payments
  • Regulates automated teller machines and night depository
  • Balances cash drawer at the end of the shift, reporting any discrepancies to the Head Teller

Customer Service:

  • Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers
  • Promotes and informs customers of the bank's products and services
  • Answers customer questions

Financial Services Academy

  • Accurately complete all requirements of the FSA curriculum as outlined in the training document

EDUCATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • A high school junior seeking the Employment Honors Plus Seal diploma
  • This job requires skills needed in a typical office environment. This includes computer skills, communication skills, as well as utilization of office equipment.
  • Must have the dexterity to count money.
  • Must be able to lift at least 30 lbs.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for an extended period of time.
  • Must be able to travel to office location.
