What is a sawmill trust?

A Sawmill Trust is a legal arrangement in the forestry and timber industry where assets such as sawmills, timberland, or related operations are managed by a trustee for the benefit of specific beneficiaries. These trusts are often established to ensure the continuity of operations, manage estate planning, or facilitate the transfer of ownership across generations. The trust helps in protecting the assets, managing distribution of profits, and providing a structured approach to succession. Sawmill Trusts are particularly useful for family-owned timber businesses and can help minimize tax liabilities while ensuring sustainable forest management.
