What is a satellite RF engineer?

Satellite RF Engineers are specialists who design, develop, test, and maintain radio frequency (RF) systems used in satellite communications. They are responsible for ensuring reliable transmission and reception of signals between satellites and ground stations, often working with antennas, transmitters, receivers, and other RF components. Their expertise is crucial for enabling services such as satellite TV, internet, navigation, and remote sensing. Satellite RF Engineers also troubleshoot signal issues, optimize system performance, and comply with regulatory standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a satellite RF engineer?

To thrive as a Satellite RF Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, with expertise in radio frequency (RF) theory, satellite communications, and often a relevant degree. Familiarity with RF simulation software (like CST or HFSS), spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and industry certifications such as FCC licensing are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork enhance success in this role. These skills and qualifications ensure reliable satellite communication systems and efficient troubleshooting in a highly technical, mission-critical environment.

What are some common challenges satellite RF engineers face when working on satellite communication systems?

Satellite RF Engineers often encounter challenges related to signal interference, atmospheric attenuation, and ensuring reliable communication links over long distances. Dealing with strict regulatory standards and coordinating frequency allocations is also part of the role. Additionally, troubleshooting hardware in remote or space-based environments can require creative solutions and close collaboration with cross-functional teams such as system integration and network operations.

What is the difference between Satellite Rf Engineer vs Satellite Communications Technician?

AspectSatellite Rf EngineerSatellite Communications Technician
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related, RF certificationsTechnical diploma or associate degree, RF and satellite training
Work EnvironmentDesign, testing, and troubleshooting RF systems in labs or fieldInstallation, maintenance, and repair of satellite systems on-site
Industry UsageDesign and optimize satellite RF systems for telecom, defense, or spaceOperate and maintain satellite communication equipment for service providers

Satellite Rf Engineers focus on designing and testing RF systems, while Satellite Communications Technicians handle installation and maintenance. Both roles require RF knowledge but differ in responsibilities and work settings.

Job Description:

L3Harris Space Systems Sector, within the Space and Mission Systems Segment, is seeking an experienced SI&T Specialist to support spacecraft integration and verification activities at our Palm Bay, FL site. This is an on-site role supporting the integration, verification, and validation of complex space systems.

The selected Systems Integration & Test (SI&T) Engineer will support the integration, configuration, verification, troubleshooting, and delivery of complex RF-based systems. This role is ideal for an engineer with strong hands-on experience in RF theory, satellite communications, GPS, tactical radios, electronic warfare (EW), and hardware/software system integration.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who takes ownership of hardware configuration and test activities, works effectively with minimal supervision, and communicates confidently with engineers, program teams, and customers. This position also requires the ability to support fielded systems, train users, improve test processes, and travel regularly in support of system deliveries.

This position requires close collaboration with systems engineering, software engineering, quality, and operations teams, as well as external partners, to ensure technical readiness and successful execution of system-level integration and verification objectives. The ideal candidate will bring strong experience in complex system integration, spacecraft or aerospace test environments, and execution of structured verification and validation processes.

Essential Functions:ย

  • Perform end-to-end RF chain analysis to support system integration, test, troubleshooting, and performance verification
  • Set up, configure, integrate, and document hardware and software systems for laboratory, field, and customer test activities
  • Execute lab testing, debugging, verification, and validation of RF and communications systems
  • Apply strong RF fundamentals across satellite communications, GPS, Electronic Warfare (EW), tactical radio systems, and power amplifier hardware
  • Configure and support Cisco networking equipment, including SNMP and VLAN configurations
  • Operate and support SATCOM terminals, tactical radios, and/or EW systems during integration, test, fielding, and delivery activities
  • Own the hardware configuration process, develop deep system expertise, and train others in system setup, operation, and troubleshooting
  • Troubleshoot hardware issues to the component level, including analog, digital, and RF components and circuits
  • Use standard electronic test equipment, including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and signal generators, to isolate and resolve system issues
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, interface control documents, and technical procedures to support integration and test execution
  • Develop, refine, and optimize test processes, procedures, checklists, and work instructions with minimal supervision
  • Work independently within established engineering processes while exercising sound technical judgment
  • Lead small, multidisciplinary teams in fast-paced integration and test environments, fostering a collaborative, humble, and mission-focused team culture
  • Interface directly with customers and senior customer leadership to provide technical support, communicate status and issues, and explain system-level performance
  • Travel up to 25% monthly to customer or field locations to support system deliveries, integration, troubleshooting, and training
